Is there anywhere in the north that's good to settle?
I can't seem to find any areas in the north that have both iron and copper relatively close. But I want to settle well outside of holy empire territory since I'm a skeleton. Does anyone know of a decent northern spot?

Well, in addition, anywhere near the ocean or large body of water would be okay too.

The spot where the river meets the floodlands in the SE of the floodlands is good, but copper poor. Upper Northwest, in the Leviathan Coast has iron, coppoer, stone, and arid land, but you'd need walls up PDQ, or a good combat squad to keep the Gutters, shrieking bandits, beserkers, iron spiders, and leviathans from stomping your settlement flat. Shrieking forest has some decent land, not all that flat, but has iron, copper, stone, and fertility- but again, it's dangerous.

As a skeleton newbie, spots in the south around the Hub and closer to Vain (for the copper) are a better bet. You can base in the Hub to start (buy a ruined building and repair it), then branch out from there.

Further south, the United Cities could care less if you are a skeleton, but getting there can be dangerous for non-combatants or weak characters. Once you are there, aside from Samurai squads shaking you down for bribe money, the threats are mostly mild. Outlaw farmers and suchlike. Manhunters patrol the east, which can become hostile to you, and skin spiders the west, which will chow down on weaker characters like a fat man at an all-you-can-eat ice cream parlor.

The better spots tend to be in areas where there are more dangerous threats. The question is, how strong is your squad? Can you hack it? Or do you need to train up on starving bandits and dust bandits first?

Well I might try the shrieking forest. My smalls quad is way too buff atm from continued beatings I got from the holy nation. And the dog I have is elder now. I also spent a few weeks in game just hording iron to resell at uhh... what's it called... the city in the fog place? So I also decked my guys out in full armor,a nd had the robot doing research in a house I bought the entire time.

*grin* Good luck.

Even a strong squad can be worn down by waves of enemies. Fogmen are weak compared to shrieking bandits. Don't be fooled by the naked, shrieking, running wildly about ones. It's easy to get swamped as more and more squads come sprinting in...

Of course I tend to have the nest multiplier cranked up a smidge. Could be that, too.

I mean, isn't that part of the fun? Fighting off waves of screaming lunatics as you try to brew some booze and grow some crops that is.

Walls with no gates and you are fine anywhere. ;)

I found a place in the shrieking forest itself and coexist with the bandits by making weird noises at eachother.

Hehe yes you can always do that but over time you will find out that it is more practical to simply bash them on the head.

just south of waystation and to the west of swamp village. thats where my settlement lives. i then have 4 skeletons at the waystation harvesting copper with 1 skeleton standing in the shops offloading the copper to help fund my settlement and hire new people. with all the money i earn i can easily pay for heavy mercs to patrol my base constantly allowing my weaker guard characters to level up while the heavies deal with any major threats.

before settling make sure the spot you are going to build on will give you enough water and that your crops will grow there. the location i specified has high quality copper and iron deposits nearby, 100% stone, 60% water and 50% and above for crop yield.
