Kenshi
Good base area for new players?
I've been playing for maybe 2-3 weeks now, and am still getting the hang of combat and exploration. (spend most of my time mining to save up for when i start a base)

I've googled for good base locations, but most are asking for areas with more combat.

I am just looking for a place that i can make a large base. Prefereably not lots of badguys or deep in enemy territory. I have quite a few non humans in my group.

So, does anyone know of a good location that would suit my needs?

The hook, stenn desert. Remember that u can build on biome borders if u want more various resources (wind, green and arid fertility...)

Every base location has quirks based upon who or what occupies the biome.

For example:

Around the Hub you have bandits, slavers, and dogs, yet nothing that comes eat your crops.

Holy Nation land has very litte bandit activity, no non-humans, however you need to pay taxes and raptors can eat your crops.

Down south you have taxes, rebels, and salvers to deal with, but very little to come eat your crops.

Vain area has no bandits or taxes, however beak things are a constant annoyance.

Far north has few raptors to eat your crops, not taxes, but cannibals are a constant threat.

So your best bet is figure out what you want to deal with. Go explore that biome and look for spots suitable to building.

Thanks for the replies. I don't mind fighting as long as the things aren't too tough, i've got martial arts up to 30 or so, and have full plate on about 8 guys. I don't want to pay taxes, and if i have walls, don't things that eat my crops need to break in?

Is there a map that lists all those locations? i haven't heard of most of them,

Sorry for the noob questions.

South east of the Waystation that is south of Squin.

The wiki has a map. [edit] Be aware, it is quite spoilerific.

Scroll down, it's there. One of the mods here- Shidan, I think- is who to thank for that. Lot of players refer to it now and then, even those of us who've already been to every location. Sometimes it helps with you want to put a destination pointer in *just* the right spot.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1194800795 this is a great starter spot. everything grows here save rice. even cactus gets %40 crops. occassional crab or 2 wanders over from the island to keep you on your toes and some beak-things live in the hills to the west. no taxes either. i get plenty of traders and drifters buying from my shop counter as well.
here's my happy lil' 80 man village.

My base is on the other side of the island to your right. Two more small islands.

I recommend the swamp. Locals are lovely and the wildlife is cute.

No but really, you can brew sake and grow hashish. Something about making narcotics and smuggling them into the empire for mad profit just fascinates me.

Edit: Oh and forgot to mention that the slave markets are nearby which means tons of cheap workers and farmers.

Another thing people haven't mentioned that you should consider is who your potential trading neighbours will be. If you want to sell things that you make at your base it can get tedious if you have to trek long distances just to find a shop to sell at.

To my mind, the "safest" non-human locations I've settled in are the large valley just south of the Waystation that is in-between Admag and Squin, in the Stenn Desert. It has all the mineral resources that are needed, a big flat space to build on, few visitors and raids and constant high wind for power. It's also just a short run to several shops in the 16 000-25 000 cash range. Downside is that it's an arid environment, so you have lower water levels and can only grow Cactus, Wheat and 40% Hemp. That makes it take longer to grow things, but you'll learn to love bread and dustwiches for lunch. ;)

The other place is a large plateau in the eastern Borderzone, just north of the Waystation there and west of the Tiny Settlement ruins. It is pretty similar to the above place I described, but there are way more Dust Bandits and their raids.

Don't become over-eager in your base building. The very first time I built a base in this game I overextended, built too many advanced buildings and didn't get a sustainable production line going, which resulted in starvation. Start small and slow, and always make sure you have enough food and that your Building Materials and Iron Plates production lines are working, since those are the core building materials.

Good luck with your base building!

it's more fun to find out yourself

Okran's Pride is the safest place, it has great water and great green land which will support a large settlement easily and there is very little bandits and great wind, it has everything except copper , which actually u not gonna need it at all , there is the raptors but no big deal

It's obviously Shem. Or Shem/Swamp border. Just hungry and dust bandits. Lots of trade caravans. Tons of free meat in swamps from slow and weak swamp raptors and also good early traning. Or have a mercy to the poor rappies and go hunt beak things in burning forest.
