There are some good spots near the edge of the south eastern portion of the map, although you'll be taxed by the Empire if you build there. No one likes taxes, so be wary of where you build regardless of which spot you may choose in the end.
There's also part of the map that seems closed off but some of the land is open, far to the north of World's End and the Deadcat fishing village, you have to swim accross the ocean to get to it although you'll be far from any semblance of civilization and only get harassed by cannibals. Mind you this last spot is really really far from everything and everyone, so it might not be that practical up until the North Eastern portion of the map opens up.
There's seemingly good land to the West of Drifter's Last and Clownsteady, south of the Bugmaster's lair, where all the varied armouries, libraries, and ruins are. It's a mixture of arid and "tropical" climate/geography so it's pleasant enough.
In the end I recommend wherever the hell you please, the beauty of Kenshi is finding a spot that just gives you that tingle and you turn it into your first village, a thriving city, a fortress, or a mere single hut with a bed, a rum distillery, and some chests. It's always ideal to be somewhat close to civilization, so you have places to visit and sell your loot/crafted goods, but that's up to you in the end.
It does seem to be one of the popular choices in how to start the game. Mining a bit of copper for cash, then setting up a small farm, and then building it into a large base. That's not to say that it's the only way to do it, of course. Stealing, scavenging and fighting are also very valid options.
Just find a gamestyle that suits you.
If you want to finish that tech-tree though, sooner or later you'll have to build a base somewhere, and you'll want a base that you can get as much out of as possible, which means several types of agriculture, access to water and traders. The mythical perfect base location that we're all looking for.
There's a good location just outside of the main holy city, but for some reason traders never visit me there - and awful neighbours. Kinda hoping there's a better location somewhere.
You can do whatever you'd like.
I personally advise caution in Base Building, a lot goes into it and it's very intensive.
So my advice is to wait a bit, adventure if you want, or mine for Iron and Copper, eventually you'll want to buy a place in a town after you get some basic "Leveling" Done with the squad. Build a Small Research Bench and have someone do Science. Once you are about mid 30's for stats and have various tech researched. I'd say Tech level 2 or 3) you MIGHT want to start considering building a small base somewhere (For example, North of the swamps in Borderlands where no Empire will try to claim you, but you might be harrassed by Bandits. (Note, I personally advise, due to bugs and other long running issues, TRADE WITH BUT DO NOT BUILD IN THE HUB. It's a long nightmare of lost gear and other issues. Throw up some shacks outside the walls and go from there, run a trade route into Vain if you'd like, or up to Stack in Holy Nation lands. Beware of Beak Things, they're a strong enemy you can't beat for a while.
Also, more important than base building. DO NOT PISS OFF ANY MAJOR FACTIONS while you're a new player or new squad. I don't care how badass you think you will be, it's not worth the lost trade routes and potential allies for new players.
There is a large group that has an irrational hate for the Holy Nation, but to me, they're much better than United Cities. HN has never attacked my squads (We're all Human, mostly Greenlander, a few Scorchlanders, and more Women than Men, and we have no issues with them, my best scout is a Female who can fight against Adult Leviathans with confidence and the worst that HN has ever done to her was to save her and bandage her up after she lost a fight against about 30 bandits, the Paladins drove them off, healed her and then said something like DON'T TALK TO ME UNLESS SPOKEN TO! before running off.... But down in the UC they demanded I kiss their boots and when I politely refused, they slapped a bounty on me and attacked. For this reason, I dislike UC. (As well as their lore backstory.... these guys are jerks!)
I have 100 percent Green, so I can grow Wheat, Greenfruit, Hemp, and cotton with great results, 113 Yield average. The only crop I cannot grow naturally is Rice, but thanks to the wonders of Technology and Hydrophonics, I grow Rice in shacks. I have plenty of Stone, Copper, Iron and thanks to unceasing attacks from very determined Gar, I never run short of Leather or Meat either. I also get visits from River Raptors, but they are simply slow moving targets for my Turret Gunners and feedback producing training dummies for my Martial Artists and Swordsmen.
Frequent attacks by Beak Things and Leviathans, as well as visits from my shockingly rude neighbors force us to have strong defenses and good equipment. (Seriously, the Cannabals need to learn to wear pants, it's so rude of them to show up uninvited AND Naked!)
The only major shortage is that the Wind Speed is very poor on average. This forces me to have large numbers of Battery Banks and two Generators to power things using Bio Fuel when the winds are dead.
It's a harsh land, but we are a tough clan, and we thrive here.
We also build all of our own equipment and occasionally sell the excess. We are explorers mostly though, so for long periods, nobody mans the bases at all.
In short, play the game the way you'd like, and here is a small perspective on how I personally play.
This helps me build toughness and they patch me up and I serve my time picking the locks to build thievery. Win-win situation so far. Right now, it's me, a woman, and my dog. My long term goal is starting my own faction large enough to be the leaders of the free world.
If you down any of them, HEAL THEM. It helps your relations and builds medic skill, also don't fight them, you need them.
Plenty of Dust and Starving Bandits to fight, as well as bone dogs.
