Stolen items

After being forced to steal food, I have to ask.
Can stolen items be detected by guards etc?

Stolen items can't really be detected by the guards, however if you try to sell those stolen items back to the same faction you stole them from, then there's a chance you'll be caught and get thrown in prison. Guards will only look at illegal goods such as hashish when you try to enter the town. Stolen swords/armor, etc. they won't find/care for.

Items have a stolen tag, not sure if guards can detect it though, I've had my inventory searched tons of times and wear stolen clothes that don't seem to be in trouble for.

Though for selling items you have to be careful what items you've stolen and where you sell it to, you can get branded for being a thief if selling items to a normal shopkeeper, (from what I hear, never tested it)
