Alternatively there's plenty of space in the Stationhouse and maybe the Swamp Dome.
Sometimes I will replace the Stormhouse with an L house, but I am bothered by the 1 power the building consumes (For no reason, it's not supposed to consume power, nor is the Long House) If I really want, I build an extra Stormhouse if terrain permits and I usually use it for more storage or generators / batteries.
Also factor in that you will eventually get hydrophonics, I will add a stucture for them if I don't have enough room for them, depending on terrain, what else I've built, and how many I want, I will usually make a Storm House but I did once build a Stationhouse for them and filled it.
A note for defense.
Make sure the Storm House door faces the Stationhouse Door and also have the Tower Door visible to both. (All three open to a courtyard, if you will) This allows unrestricted defense.

I have armour racks against the walls with armour chests just in front. Then beds in front of those. I like to keep things organised as I have a lot of crap. Afraid I'm a hoarder but at least I stopped hoarding grey ranked items for the most part.
Doing it this way means still plenty of space left for job stations or general furniture, other storage etc.
With 3 weapons crafting stations you must have an impressive amount of steel bars, iron plates, iron mines, hemp factories..
i would say, 5 to 6 iron plates and 3 steel bars factories. ;)
imho one is more than enough especially since you find better weapons in armories. ;)

Ouch lol, you will burn your video card ^^
I've never really run into many slow downs that seem to be related to the number of characters on the screen. I don't have a crazy video card, but I do have a stupid amount of RAM in this computer. I'm currently at ~90 characters, but have been up to 130 or so without any framerate issues - all running around base.
A few updates ago, my base near squin was attacked by a bunch of scrawny cannibals. I'm not sure how many there were (it wasn't crazy), but watching my 50 newbies smack them around was awesome. I hope the upcoming diplomacy will send raids of 50+ enemies (though they'll just get slaughtered by my harpoons).
At times, some of my characters just refuse to do anything (currently dealing with 15 dead, large hemp farms). That seems to be related to the large squad...but it runs smoothly.
Meh. No complaints; I'm sure I'm not playing the way the game was intended. When 1.0 comes around, I'll start over and run all around the map for a while looking for AI cores...but after a while, I'll settle down and try to build a giant city again.
I think Hatsune has a mod to increase the number of enemies.
