From our blog - more than you wanted to know about co-op:

Co-op

Our biggest new feature is probably the co-op. How does it work? Well, we asked ourselves that for years as players kept asking for it but we couldn’t see how it would ever make sense. The idea we finally settled on came from a conversation I had with a friend who said he wished his children could pick up the controller and play with them, even if it was only during the scavenging bits.
Now, during basically any combat scenario (and a few other hidden ones) a friend on the second controller can jump in and assist you.
During scavenging, player 2 takes control of a dog that can stun zombies with a bark and grab supplies and bring them back to the player. During shootouts or fishing, player 2 takes the role of one of your party members helping you shoot bandits or catch extra food. Player 2 can even take the wheel if you don’t have the guts to put down an infected party member. There’s lots of fun stuff we added so I implore you to explore the game and find them for yourself.

tldr; player 2 hit a button during combat to join in

I have a keyboard and mouse hooked up i use, and an X-box controller, my girlfriend tried to push buttons on the controller, and we were both controlling the same guy. No dog was present, am i doing something wrong?

I believe if you have a controller plugged in they default to being player one. I believe the controls for Player two are
  • move with IJKL on the keyboard
  • Right Shift makes them join
  • Right Control is their back button

When second playing using keyboard I lose control of mouse and keyboard and can't shoot same with him.
What are the controls?

Yes, sorry. Currently, for the full Second Player experience both players have to be using controllers. IJKL, Right Shift, and Right Control work for fishing and playing as the Dog, but 2P won't be able to aim in other minigames. We are devising a solution to this.

Damn, but atleast I know there is a solution in the works!

two player does not work at all for me with both controllers. One controller does everything, and pressing every button on the second controller does nothing in a combat situation

Hey dev. How can I use the Xbox One controller in this game? I bought because I know this game has contrller support, but I still have to use the mouse for everything. Only thing that responded was the A button on the controller when (and only when) i was in battle mode. I place the mouse somewhere on the screen, use the A button to give command. Thats it....

turns out I was trying to do coop on the non-full version. disregard my comment.

Can you please enable "steam remote play", so we can coop. From what I've been told by other developers is that it's literally just a toggle on the games page. then anyone that owns the game can use it

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
