I think you might do better if you get good at scavenging without using bullets, and if you stop more often between towns.
1: Scavenge like crazy.
Starting at 10:00 AM, and running until 2:00 PM, scavenge no matter where you are. And if you're really low, consider scavenging during Medium Zombie times. As Avec mentioned above, learn to conserve your shots when scavenging. Fast Movement is a very useful combat trick to have in this case.
2: Put the pedal to the metal!
I almost always put my vehicle on Turbo. Scrap can be scavenged to fix the car with. Fuel can't, and it gets more expensive as time goes on. So damaging the car by going faster can be repaired, but running out of fuel is a constant worry.
3: Keep the party leader's health up.
It's really annoying that the party leader can't rest to recover health, and you're forced to use First Aid kits. (Unless, of course, he's the last member of the party.) Still, try to keep a few First Aid kits around, and try to keep your health above at least half. Never know when a random broken leg or stray bullet will take out your leader.
4: Rest in towns.
Resting in towns, or any settlement, will improve how much health is restored. So rest a majority of your party before heading out. If you're low on food, set rations to minimal. You won't recover as fast, but it'll stretch out your food budget more. (Probably more per oz. of food used, at the cost of time, but I don't know for certain.) It can get tedious, but also go fishing as much as possible to stretch out the food budget, and maybe pick up some scrap or car parts.
5: Trade!
Whenever you're at a settlement, see who will trade with you. Most of the time it's nothing good, but you can get some sweet deals on occasion. And it costs no time (Unless you're waiting around for a trade) so go ahead and take a look.
Exactly this, I completed my first and only suicide run using this method.
Scavenge when zombie frequency is low is definitely a must. But since it's suicide difficulty the amount you get compared to a lower difficulty is very low. Sometimes all you get is 10 food or just ammo but nevertheless you still have to do it to get free stuff. When your supplies are high and you think you don't need much you can stop scavenging and move on.
Start saving food and start selling it off when the price goes to 3 and up. Food should be the easiest resource to come by when scavenging and if you ration your guys to eat small portions, you can recover their health when you get to a city. A couple of rests and your guys, besides the leader, should be in tip top health. If the trip is long, i'm talking about about 600 miles and longer, you may want to switch to medium and towards the end switch to small portions.
Heck if you actually just want to beat the game on suicide for the hell of it, just kill all your party members. The game changes drastically as you don't need as much food, resting actually recovers health for party leader (so that means med kits aren't as useful but at least you can sell them for lots of money), but that also means you don't have backup when fighting through hordes or the last map with picking up power for generator.
Yes you don't get much for your end score but it's an option :)
* Ammo. Most of the beginning time went into ammo alone
* Scavenging. Over-scavenge. Ideally, you scavenge during low and medium times. I don't notice too much of a difference between low and medium, but I bet you can get away with using less ammo on low. I think it's 8AM - 2PM for low. Around 8 AM and 2 PM is medium.
* Trading. Trade that food and scrap for other things. This has been a key. I also get more than necessary, like at one time having 8 tires. Thank goodness this game doesn't take storage space into account
* Selling scrap, and being strategic about it. This is what can give you a boost in money. Scrap is plentiful, and the sale price differs from town-to-town. Some towns sell it for $1. Some sell it for $4. I think somewhere sells it for $6. Sell it where it's high
* Upgrades and combat abilities! They can get more out of your scavenging and resting. The right ones are a great investment. Try to have $80 on you for upgrades if possible (which can be tough to do in this difficulty)
One combat ability that worked against me: money collecting boost. I literally am playing a game where I have lots of money that I can't spend. Still, some traders will trade for money. I also kill all of the zombies on low, and I do have to trade for more ammo, but I'm still making it. It ended up replacing regular loot for money, though large money bags did indeed appear
