How to deal with Adaptoids?
I hate those things. There's no way to know if a machine is an adaptoid until you're right next to it and unless you have an assault weapon and several points in it, they can tear you apart easily in lower levels.

If I could take them from a distance I may have a chance, but I'm always in melee until they reveal themselves and I can't spend ammo to check every single object.

Anyone got some way to deal with them?

They actually make a sound when you're within a few spaces of them; it's subtle, but it's there. Also, they tend to camoflague themselves as objects that wouldn't normally appear in the room - see a Medical Locker in a room with the Gun or Shield Symbol on it's doors? probably an Adaptoid.

Last but not least, if you have a Motion Sensor, Adaptoids will show up as enemies on your map.

Yeah, I also dislike them. It's rather hard to identify them. They usually wreck my ♥♥♥♥ up, if you don't have a assault rifle, it will destroy everything that you have in you inventory, the "grabbed" attack is even worse.

sorry junker...adaptoids dont have acid...they don't wreck equipment...you are thinking of standard proteans.

Greil also you may want to keep an eye out for out of place devices in rooms...like and armor dispenser in a cafeteria...that sort of thing. When in doubt use a light damage ranged weapon against suspicious devices from far away...they can be driven off fairly easily. Also they do a lot of slicing damage so polarized armor is your friend.
Seems like I got confused with them, the squishy ones are all the same to me.

lol be careful when you meet the xombie ones ;)

I really dislike Proteans of any colour. Especially the Honking big huge ones!!!

You learn by their placement when it's a adaptoid, they are normally out of place, f.e adjecent to another furniture in a weird way. Have to pay attention ;)

Only sometimes they're indistiguishable at distance from other things in a room you'd normally find a locker.
Actually I have to admit that the devs did a great job with this. Usually if you have certain games that have enemies in the same style, it's usually really easy to distinguish them. In this game I encountered a tons of adaptoids, but they still get me.

I wouldn't say "great job". when several enemies gang on me I blame myself. When I refuse to use a medkit since level up is close I blame myself.

When an adaptoid is free to destroy me in a few turns with VERY low chance to notice it beforehand I feel cheated. Maybe if it was reasonable to deal with it in melee range, but unless you're a marine or get lucky and find ton of good gear it will kill you.

Adaptoids are actually relatively easy to deal with, but you need to have the methodology down and even then it's no guarantee.

Firstly you need to know when something is probably an adaptoid. If an unlockable is out of place, it may be one (although plenty of times it won't be). If you see a room with an unusual number of unlockables, there's probably one. You can use a motion sensor if you want.

Secondly, you can alternatively check each case with relatively little risk to yourself. Walk up to anything WITHOUT bumping into it. Walk to a square directly next to it, and turn to it using CTRL. Press space once. If the prompt does not come up, it's an adaptoid. Get as far away as you can, manually target the thing, and fire away. You can do this with mines, too...if you detect a mine in a room you haven't checked all the unlockables in, try shooting the mine and see if it sets off any adaptoids. They usually do not break any unlockables.

It bears repeating- if you have a single shot pistol, you can shoot an unlockable you are concerned about with NO risk of destroying the unlockable. The Auto-Pistol is more dangerous to use for this, especially if the unlockable has already been damaged by other fighting in the room.

The Target Pistol is perfect for "Adaptiod Investigating."

just finished a run via adaptoid, entered an armory, saw the medical locker in the croner, thought "aha! an adaptoid!" moved to the far end of the room from it, with my back to an ammo crate, shot the medical locker, the ammo crate then ate my face.

Yep, "keep an eye out for out of place devices in rooms" doesn't work, several times it was obvious, but most of the times it's a device meant for the room / can be in that specific room, so only way to know for sure is by the sound...like game wasnt hard enough already.
