I know the game was just released, and I enjoyed it quite a bit!
I'm curious if you guys have any plans for DLC in the future?
For Example to continue with the theme, the each DLC would contain a different gaming genre from the years, and enhance on it just like the main game.
So like DLC one could be:
Evoland: Platformventures
The DLC would this time start out much like Super Mario, and slowly grow into Rayman, or various RARE games, then turn into Assassin's Creed type games. With a storyline, obviously.
or
Evoland: Shoot 'Em
This one would draw on how the shooter genre has changed over the years, starting with the old sidescrolling shooters, like Metal Slug, and turn into Golden Eye, and finally turn into Battlefield with all the different lighting styles.
JUST A THOUGHT.
There was only two things I found kinda annoying; The first was that Turn Based levels didn't carry over to anything else (IE the three stats could have carried over the Diablo stage). And the second is the unwinnable fight at the black citadel, while RPGs have done that in the past, if it's going to be unwinnable why have a fight at all? A different ending based off of that fight would have been interesting tho I can see why for canonical reasons that could pose an issue.
One thing the game did lack is side quests/mission (only the cooked chokobo meat one as far as I can see), it's possible to have a few side missions/quests added in to get some additional content placed in for an additional stage of each of the three main styled, Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda and Diablo.
There are other types of classic RPGs that were missed out but I just can't see how they'd fit in like the Tactical/Strategy RPGs such as Fire Emblem, Shining Force, etc and so that's a possible alternative tho probably advisable as something to do with a completely different character but in the same world/universe. Perhaps the son/daughter of the Hero from Evoland but with different RPGs, tho might be a fair amount of work to do that. You could potentially even pull a Zelda 2 here and basically have the game being about getting blood to perform a resurrection of the final boss!
Potentially this could mix with other RPG types that evoland couldn't like with Western RPGs like Baldur's Gate style or SW:KOTOR style (tho is that considered classic yet?). This is a more complex system than evoland tho and so I'd assume this would be a lot more work and require more resources than evoland did. Alternatively it could just have a larger party and evolve into an SRPG at the end kinda like how evoland went into a Diablo styled stage towards the end, that might be a simplier solution but that'd be trailing off of RPG types that are already covered in evoland.
If a sequel were to move away from RPGs, tho it does need something that would evole and IMO something that has a similar feel to evoland. To that degree I don't think shooters are the way forwards. Platformers could work, like starting with early platformers similar to Donkey Kong, moving on to the Ghosts and Ghouls type of platformer before going to the sonic vs mario era... tho please avoid sonic for anything 3d related! Mario 64 was pretty good for platforming as was Crash Bandicot(sp). Also there are some platformer/RPG hybrids around to, like Paper Mario and Maplestory.
1) make it as free DLC for the folks who own Evoland
2) Include a lot longer time periods for each.. time period... and make the whole game a bit longer. I know the plot was mostly an excuse plot, with a lot of delicious tropes, but it could have been fleshed out a bit (and as far as tropes... please get rid of the Guide Dang It tropes involving illusionary walls. Give -some- indication that there may be something to investigate.)
3) Reduce the cost. As it stands, I'm currently recommending to people who may be interested to wait for 50%-75% sales.
As much as a well-crafted love letter to the evolution of RPG's this was... it's not worth the price.
We need a basketball mode with tennis and football.
And soccer.
But there is so many more type of RPG gameplay and even other type of gameplay you could have used to tell video games history...
I suggest you for Evoland 1.1 or Evoland 2 to add some of those :
I agree with most of the suggestions here for evoland 2. Games to consider are:
DW1 had stairs as a menu option. DW2 let you interact with it on its own. That'd be a fantastic chest upgrade. Torches would also be fun. being able to build a town like DW3 would be great as well as the way you could see DW1 lands in DW2 (future) and DW3 (past).
being able to construct a party like FF1 would be great, perhaps as a side quest.
Inventory - i'd like to see more work here. Once the diablo inventory name chuckles ran out, it was mostly just a reminder at how little control i had over my character's attacks.
Being able to switch characters freely would be nice. I picked the sorceress in the diablo cave and never really got to experiment with the hero's attacks
dialog - having to answer yes or no to people would be great, full on dialoge choices would be even better. that could be a whole evolution system on its own. progress from acknowledging to yes/no, to choices of answers, to being able to ask questions.
Would love to see a sailing ship make an appearance.
I think you should definitely explore the changes in "leveling" that games have made from linear heath increases to levels and then individual stats and then talents.
The idea of exploring elder scrolls style FPS is great, as is starting as a pure text adventure.
I would look at secret of mana, earthbound, startropics, link to the past's inventory of puzzle solving items, FF tactics style games, and Castlevania 2 for inspiration.
More boss fights and more familiar NPCs would be good too.
You could also consider a FFVI style story where different groups end up meeting up and interacting at various points in the story and each group can explore different systems and tropes. That would soften some of the blow of abrubt stylistic changes as well.
There's definitely plenty of room to consider making an evoland 2 and i think it'd be well recieved if you were able to find ways to incorporate more of the genre's history and memorable moments in the game.
For example, pick Final Fantasy like game as an starting point and then show how that style of game evolved over the years. There is serious lack of consistency in Evoland.
It's nice to have a fast paced game, but Evoland is so fast paced that you don't really have time to enjoy the different stages of game - and gameplay.
It would be nice to have random generated dungeons in each stage of developement and an option to re-visit different evolvement-stages in order to replay them.
Evoland 2 doesn't have to start where Evoland has ended (Evolution-wise), but it could touch elements that were left out like the mix of RPG and strategic games (FF Tactics like battles) and, as the aspects I described above.
I don't know if it has been already said.
As I have seen between the LD and the Steam version, Nicolas Cannasse made a lot of changes.
I think Warp would be able to make a marvellous Evoland 2.
So, I thought about some way to upgrade Evoland.
1 - Multiplayer
I thought that a multiplayer mode with a bot in a speed run to upgrade.
2 - Storyline
I think Evoland 2 shouldn't have to start where the first one finished.
It can be a totally new adventure but it should have the same gameplay : evolution.
3 - References
Some references have been found in the books at the first town ( "Mein Combat" :) ).
It was a good idea, but I think you should make a giant library.
So, with some update and DLC, you can add references.
4 - New mazes and puzzles
Mazes and puzzles were really good so please continue that.
Is Evoland 2 already planned ?
Can you please tell us an apprimative date for Evoland 2 release ?
Thank you for reading.
So the game will be released later.
And I can't wait for it.
1. Longer Game/Slower Evolution.
(J)RPG's are not new, they first came out in the mid 70's, over 30 years ago. I think Evoland should take this and give us more eras and have them all at longer equal length. I think maybe adding chapters/worlds would be good, I liked how after waking the power of the crystal unlocked the 3D instead of getting it from a chest. I think that there should be main dungeons and when you "unlock the power of the crystal" the game evolves into a new era as well as the chests adding enhancements to that era scattered around the overworld and in dungeons.
2. More Eras.
Like what has been said before, it'd be awesome if you started of with a test based adventure then you gained movement and a playable character, I didn't really like how smoother scrolling was added really quickly, it'd would've been better if the opening section of the game was more like the original "Legend of Zelda" instead of "A link to the Past". Also I would've liked seen a era with a 2.5D isometric view with RTS battles like Disgaea. Also a 64 bit era like Ocarina of time, (one thing I think should have been added was character grunts). Finally the game should evolve into first person style like "The Elder Scrolls" where you can customize equipment and then finally a full HD adventure like " Final Fantasy XIII" and "White Knight Chronicles". Cutscenes should evolve as well like adding voice acting, CGI, etc. The Title Screen/Inventory should evolve with the game as well like a game of that era. Also the leveling up should evolve, start like it does in Evoland then gain the ability to add perks into areas like "Attack", "Defense" etc. then add skill tree starting of basic then evolving to advanced ones like Skyrim.
3. Side Quest/Rewards
Side quests are a staple in (J)RPG's so there's no reason why they should be left out. Obviously the would get more complex as they go, but Evoland would've been better if some stars/cards/glis were awarded to you after you have done a quest for villagers. Also there should have been in game rewards for collecting stars like the Fast DVD Player in Aogai Village.
4. Console Versions
(J)RPG's never usually come to PC and are mainly on consoles, so having disced copies on consoles (as well as PC) will give it the true feeling of a (J)RPG.
