What's up with the D-pad not working properly?

I have to repeatedly press each direction to get the character to continue to move. If I just hold a direction down, he will only move one sprites worth, then stop. I have to let go and press the direction button again to resume movement.

Every so often, he'll move move the 1 sprite before stopping, but it's certainly less often.

Any fix for this? I know the 2D section is quite short.
