Tunnels? Trowels?
Ok So, I just wanted some info on tunnels in general, maybe a few pictures, but I have dogs patrolling my pereimeter and they keep finding trowels even though I have no prsioners?

They are false positives... they happen from time to time. It's not a glitch, just the dogs smelling something odd that smells similar to a tunnel and turns out not to be a tunnel.

Dogs and Toilet searches both are not 100% chances to find tunnels. Sometimes it will be false. TO double check the trowel/tunnel marking, Take a dog patrol and go over that spot a couple more times. If he detects it again and plots down another small yellow flag, try to find out where it's going. Then, when it ends at a cell block, start dismantling toilets to find the tunnel.

The trowel represents a place where a tunnel is detected by a dog or guard. It is sometimes false. he trowel isnt actually an item.

Wait, I tried taking them over, how do I know if they have found anything?

I find the false positive count to be far too high at the moment. It gets quite irritating especially with the ruddy accompanying noise! (Aye it's the little things with me!)
Once you have two or three yellow flags down, build a toilet on top of the closest pipe... then dismantle it. Tunnel found. This works even if the tunnel is detected way out in the field.

That definitely sounds like a bug that needs fixed.

It's not a bug, it's more like an abuse of the game's logic. To find a tunnel you have to dimantle a toilet. As you can place toilets anywhere you can use them in the way mentioned.
Emmote Mar 2, 2015 @ 9:38am
Yeah, that's definitely an exploit. Tunnels should have a status on each tile to say whether it is an entrance or not to fix that.

I have very few escapes any more. I try to place a dog in each cell block and have skake downs at least every 2 days. I start the shake down after lock down. If I,m suspecious of an area I will right click on an item in a cell and have that cell block serched. Placing dogs outside of the prison walls, in my opion, is a waste of dogs.

i had a dog finding multibale posetives on 1 spot
search whole cellblock find nothing
searched it again nothing
some ingame ours later whole tunnel system and 7 inmates escaped
it feels very broke
and even if you remove al tools to dig they start DIY woodenpickaxes
Also the dogs dont dig for tunnels anymore i find that stupid then why am i hiring dog walkers then? are partrools meaningless then?

You hire dog patrols to warn you, to let you know that tunnels might be around. Use them to find a pattern in the flags, to find the source of the tunnel. Search the offending cell blocks, or dismantle the toilets and you will have your tunnels.

Be aware that searching cells only has a 50% chance to find a tunnel (and that certainly does not mean that searching twice will guarantee a find).

You should really being doing a shakedown every two days at the very least. They will consistently find tunnels. Do it at night time too, to interupt digging as that can only happen at night.

i personally just have my dogs circling around my invididual cell blocks. They get the odd misplaced flag but usually a tunnel wil get multiple flags from the same dog within seconds as the dog walks over the spot. I mhave to do a bit more looking for this but I think when prisoners are digging through a large pipe the dogs may have a harder time detecting the tunnel.

I agree that it is a lame way to find a tunnel, but after I've searched all of the cells three or four times and found nothing. And the dogs are still alerting all over the tunnels/pipes... yet can't seem to dig them up, I just got annoyed with it.

Putting the toilet on the pipe was a last ditch attempt to find the tunnel and to be honest, I was a bit surprised that it worked. Now, that I know how to do it... it definitely feels like an exploit, but only because it has 100% chance to work.

The current method of sending work crews into all of the cells to dismantling every toilet feels like an unnecessary time sink. Having the dogs detect a tunnel but not giving us a way to dig where the dogs alert seems broken.

Hopefully, the devs add an "Expose Tunnel" option that gives us a chance to dig up the tunnel (maybe it doesn't dig up the entire tunnel, so that we have to dig a bit to find out where it originates).

Since the game is still in Alpha, I expect there to be things that we must 'work around' in order to make it to the next patch. The 'toilet in the field' trick is my 'Expose Tunnel' work around.
