Why can't two power stations work together?
When my prison needs another power station I make them joint but it just causes the other to shut down when ever I turn on the other one.

They just can't work together. Every power station and belonging power lines have to be seperate from other power stations/lines. In the Utility screen, there's a different color for each circuit.
Note: with switches, you can build a single grid with multiple power stations. Disadvantage: You can't power it all at once.

So you wanna run 2 generators in series? Yeah, that wouldn't end well for your lights, and people on death row will probably explode. Because this game doesn't alow parallel, you got to just power a whole new grid. Because of this. They probably did this so you don't have to know minor electrician knowledge. Immagine that there is a breaker when 2X the electicity comes back to complete the circuit. The second generator wasn't ready for that, so you blown fuse or the circut breaker is tripped.it shouldn't be an issue though, just make sure the wires don't meet from the second generator and you will be golden

Actually you can always combine generator circuits. The problem comes in with HOW in phase the circuits are. If the generators are in phase (0 degrees apart) their AC voltages and currents would combine completely, but if they are out of phase (90 degrees apart) the voltages and currents will appose each other to such an extent that they will basically cancel each other out. The trick is to apply some sort of phase correction to one of the circuits in order to modify the phase difference between the two so that you can get the desired power output. Just be careful not to exceed your rated line currents when combining two generator circuits, otherwise things could get smoky!

Would you wanna buy a computer chip to make things work right? Or you could just use 2 different circuits.

Ahh I see.

Technically you can join the power lines of two generators together, but only via a Switch set to Off. If you use a lot of switches you can move individual areas between generators on the fly, allowing you to expand and contract power grids depending on needs and new areas.
