Building Heck in a matchbox
Having realised I could have hundreds of prisoners without my game slowing down as long as I never expanded the map under any circumstances I have been trying to build Mini-Prisons and I feel I am getting fairly good at it.
With that said one of my recent grand revelations was that if you build a toilet beside your cafeteria and zone it as being part of the cafeteria inmates will go there during designated eating hours rather than soil themselves!

Hardly Earth shattering I know and it solved a massive hygiene problem in my prison.

Another less useful discovery was that inmates will happily take a showers in the yard!

Just don't put the outdoor showers near the visitors centre as it results in swarms of families rushing past a wall of naked men.... I should have taken a snapshot.

Anyway, On to the point of my experimentation with acts of exhibitionism!
I want smallest functional prison which will remain stable with a high volume of inmates. Using armed guards and harsh punishment to supress inmates renders reform programs useless. Amost no inmates enter the programs and those that do have a 100% failure rate. Mopping and ironing need no training however so I narrowed my prison down tot his

No workshop and no class rooms. There is also those pesky cells. A bed and a toilet for each inmate? I don't think so. 3 inmates to a bed in the detention cell and comunal toilets for all! This solves the problem of inmates refusing to sleep in their own cell by not giving them one!

Sleep time is now an issue. Without enough beds to go round you need to get the inmates hot bunking. I did this by removing sleep for the timetable along with everything other than work and eat. Unassigned inmates that feel the need can sleep during work time then wake up for feeding thus freeing up their beds for another round of sleepers. It's like musical chairs, but with insomnia!
Sadly this system isn't ideal...

Sleep is still a big issue.
But! As an added bonus to my efforts I have solved the Spoon problem!
My inmates no longer steal hundreds and hundreds of spoons!

They want forks!

I don't know whether to be thrilled or appalled that this system works, but with close to 300 inmates in a prison with only 95 beds, 14 showers and 12 toilets there has never been a riot, or serious injury. No on has ever tried to escape, assaulted a guard or other inmate or even smashed up a bed. This particular design is close to capacity. I dare say it wont go far past 300 before falling to bits but.... there has to be a way! At 43by53 tiles, with the current 280+ inmates in there that is 8 tiles per inmate. Can that be taken down to 5? What would it take to get 300 inmates into a 39 by 39 prison?

...

That´s actually the case with everything ...
my Canteen not only has toilets, but also phone booths, billard tables and weight benches ...
especially the phone booths and toilets are much frequented, but the billard tables and weight benches also see use by my prisonrs.

Likewise my shower complex has a separate room (as part of the showers) that has toilets, phone booths and weight benches.

Keeps my prisoners extremly satisfied.
The only time I ever had a problem with unhappy prisoners was, when a shakedown took too long ... made 2 of my prisoners unhappy enough to try to attack a guard in the shower ... aside from this the maximum prison incidents are attempts to smuggle things despite 1/3 of my prisoners being maximum security ones (who don´t get treated differently from the other ones)
Yes, I always put TVs and phone booths in my canteen. it never struck me to use toilets though... it didn't seem like something you should be zoning as canteen. anyway, this also helps with the doorway issue... by having more than just food on offer you get people to move away from the doors rather than just stop dead and block everyone behind them improving flow a lot.
I stuck toilets in the holding cell along with TVs, phone booths, showers and weight benches. Those not sleeping or working can do whatever the heck they want in there. Common room and yard zones have been rendered useless in this design and shower zones would be activly counter productive. It's odd that inmates are fixed to the zone the timetable directs them to and they wont go outside it for any reason.. even if they are about to... err.. well... they arent house broken clearly.
I've never filtered my prisoners by security level. but with that said I usualy start medium and transition to maximum. In this case I started maximum and stuck with it all the way.
