How to keep prisoners from digging out?
I have had a few escapes recently due to them digging out. Is something like perimeter wall supposed to stop this, or do I have to search them more carefully?

Positioning of toilets in cells, distance from cell wall to outer walls, contraband control, shakedowns, dog patrols,

Think about these things.

The perimeter wall slows them down, it doesn't stop them.

1. get dog patrols where they will dig, dog will tell you there is a tunnel somewhere
2. they will dig the fastest way out which is along water pipes
3. search the cells where you think the tunnel is coming from
4. repeat step 3. until tunnel found you don't find them on the first try they will start in a toilet
5. get a perimeter wall to slow down the digging
6. get a fence far out too so they need to dig further
7. let an officer patrol the area outside the prison if they are not "Quick" then he might get them

Low freedom stat causes them to try to escape. Prisoners with priority freedom need will try to escape more often. Give them lots of freedom and not much time spent locked down in cell, they will not try to escape as much. They dig tunnels during sleep and free time periods, schedule searches during these times. Minimize free time to reduce the amount of time they get to spend digging a way out.

Well this begs the question, HOW does one exactly locate tunnels in progress? As in, showing the tunnel, not some yellow flags that indicate a tunnel in progress somewhere, which dog handlers in outside areas are prone to find.

A total shakedown (searching all areas) didn't reveal anything besides a small to medium amount of contraband, and having dogs walk into each cell per patrol path only ever caught hidden contraband.
I did hear dismantling toilets revealed tunnels, though, possibly. Hm, would a manual search of the toilet work opposed to an automatic one?

Well, atleast there's a good ol trick of leaving an 'open' area surrounded by perimiter walls and a few guarded chokepoints, which makes them think they've dug far enough and guards can intercept them as they escape. Armed guards are probably handy for this but so far i never had to shoot them. Tazers are great for this though.

Change SLEEP regime to LOCKDOWN regime and they wont dig anymore =]

Dogs can only find tunnels outside a building.

A search has a chance to not find the tunnel. You need to use multiple dogs to pinpoint the cell(s) the tunnel is coming from and then dismantle the tunnel.

You mostly find the tunnel when the guards notice the prisoner is not in his cell. You have to manually search every cell block since a shakedown makes a lo of noise.
You can check how I usually do it here: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=453885924. Even with low security prisoners, I don't have any escape (but I do have a lot of attempts).

I do cell block searches every night. Still have 0 escapes in 69 ingame days.

I started leaving the Big Pipes well away from the cell blocks, piping everything there with small pipes. When a tunneling prisoner hits a Big Pipe, he can travel through it and start tunneling again where the Big Pipe nears the perimeter.

Dog patrols outside the cell blocks at night is something I do also, but lately I haven't had many tunnelers anyway.

Do a shakedown every night when they go to bed, the negative effects of it won't last to the morning
Hammond Jun 29, 2015 @ 9:59am
Search cells especially search the toilet could discover tunnels. When dogs warn yellow flags, I usually search the cell toilets near by, then the cells around.

A total shakedown also could discover tunnels, if you do it at sleep time, there would be dummies on bed, if the prisoners were digging underground.

Dogs not only warn possible tunnel locations, they also sometimes dig out escaping prisoners, I had once the dog dig out two prisoners from a tunnel, they were half way under the yard.

Try best to clear tools supply.

The biggest clue to a tunnel somewhere is when a dog handler puts a line of the yellow flags.
How i deal with tunnels is i have the main prison compound where the prisoners are allowed.
Next i have an outer fence but where people usally put gates, i don't put the gates down. I will have guards and armed guards guarding the only holes. When prisoners dig to escape, they will dig to the space between my fences, come out, then run to the road where there is no fence. There they will meet a shotgun or two, a baton or two, or a few tasers. I read this works but i don't know if this was fixed. I never needed to test it.

Just build a giant holding cell instead of individual cells. they wont dig ever.
