dont use the bulldoze tool, as that removes the foundation, and will make those squares exterior squares, use the remove walls tool.
if you drag over the wall, the wall will be destroy (useful if you want to increase size of your canteen or sth like that
if you drag only to the next field, the new part of the building will be build, without removing the wall.

Placing it next to the wall will keep the walls up, overlapping will extend the current room destroying the walls.
