Ironing Board placement

I have a hard time placing ironing boards without getting the error about being unable to reach the working position.

If an ironing board is set left/right horizontal, what side should not be blocked? Top/bottom/left/right?

If oriented vertically, what side should be left open?

I feel like I am not seeing any consistency in when the error occurs.

I set all mine with the back (short straight edge) towards the the wall and either side open because it always works.

How about you just try it?
Flip it vertical, place it against the left wall, against the right wall and see what you get.
Flip it twice after that, see if it changed. Is it a one or a two directional item? Figure it out.
