Guard Tower Range - Test Results
After over an hour of testing I've found the following:

-Snipers MUST have a direct line of sight to SPOT an unruly/escaping prisoner (meaning they can't be inside or have a wall between them and the sniper)

*UPDATE: This is now been deemed not 100% confirmed, though it is possible for snipers to "not see" prisoners. What conditions must be met for this are currently not fully known, but it is reasonable to assume that prisoners who are inside (aka, in any area with a foundation) cannot be shot at, but snipers can shoot FROM inside TO outside.
(information gathered from post/reply by "Hades- King of the Underworld")

-After spotting said prisoner, snipers seem capable of shooting over/through walls (as of right now)

-Found in another post:

MY sniper shot into my shower block, it had a concrete wall between them, so long as there are no foundations inbetween they seem to work

Spotting range has been tested up to 45 meters/blocks (full range is more than likely higher, my guess is at LEAST 50. Possibly up to 100 like in the now obsolete Sniper Towers mod)

Firing Range has been tested up to 50 meters/blocks (The difference between spotting and firing range: Spotting range is the distance when the sniper first sees the convict; Firing range is the distance when the shot is actually fired. Time between spotting and firing is roughly 1 second)

*UPDATE: Range for snipers has been confrmed by "Hades- King of the Underworld" to be up to 83 Meters/blocks (in diagonal as well, so thats closer to 87-90 when calculated). So it's currently reasonable to assume that max sniping range is in the area of 100 meters.

-When a sniper has spotted an unruly convict a red line will appear from the sniper to said convict.

-Though untested I believe it's safe to assume snipers can only focus on one prisoner at a time, just like any other guard.

-If Freefire is activated, snipers will shoot to kill under any circumstance.

-If Freefire is OFF then they will simply become unconscious when shot, even if a prisoner is escaping, and brought back inside and given medical attention. If a prisoner is INSIDE THE PRISON then they get 3 warning shots before being shot Unconscious.

-Snipers cause suppression when firing warning shots and when taking down a prisoner (shooting them unconscious). Warning shots will often cause a prisoner to surrender, but not always. This suppression also affects nearby prisoners around the prisoner being targeted, but this quantity is lower than suppression by armed guards since armed guards have a constant suppressing aura.

One thing that really annoys me is that snipers don't have jail keys -.- I feel like they should. I like putting Solitary Doors on my armouries and they have to go to the armoury to get their rifle (which makes sense, so why don't they have jail keys???)

Hmm... From what i seen it would be around 10 - 20 Blocks wide?

how about testing it out?
People who ask a question that others might also want to ask, then delete the thread once they get their answer, are really really annoying.

The search function exists so that people can see if their own question has been answered before. Don't delete threads once your question is answered!

Quoted for truth.

Go ahead and test it, then come back to tell us.

I never thought of that. I'll keep this post up then.

Alright, fair enough. I'll let you know what I find.

I'll admit I was being lazy and hoping someone would already know. Lol, guess that's what I get.

You're not being lazy. Well, in this context, you were. Just as I was, coming here via googling for this question. :D

But frankly, this is so annoying: in the FRW, an architect would just research how far a guard (or a the type of guard that would be placed in the towers) could reliably see, and she'd find that out easily. We? We have to guess. I really grow more and more annoyed at all the guessing games forces us to do (or datamining).

Yeah, I originally posted just asking the question. Since nobody seemed to know and asked me to test it, I accepted. I didn't find definitive values, but hopefully what I found is sufficient for now. Plus, I'd hope that architects (players of this game) don't rely on single snipers for a massive prison, so these distances should suffice for most situations. Much further and you risk long delays between spotting and firing and potential escapes.

i got my sniper to lock on from inside the armory and through the canteen at about 71m away on a diagonal

Interesting. Maybe there are some bugs right now? Because I know the guards have blind spots. I watched a guard I had placed completely "ignore" an escaping prisoner in my test prison. Or maybe it's something to do with the guard towers specifically? Because that sniper was in a tower when the prisoner escaped. So its plausible that a bug exists that allows snipers that aren't in their towers can see through walls. Or maybe MY game bugged? Who knows. It's all speculation at this point.

Thank you for sharing! Hopefully we start finding consistencies.
