Prisoners having a walk out of prison
My prison is built this way. I have an inner yard, protected by a fence, and there's a terrain between that fence and the outter fence (surrounds the entire map with both road doors) Prisoners, asumming they aren't jumping the yard's fence are accessing these grounds through two prison doors (with bars and operated by guards) one after the other (I built them this way as a hatch, in order to keep the prisoners trapped between both of them in case they are lucky and one of them is open)

I still don't know why prisoners are there, and why no guard seems to care for what are they doing there. In fact, at night they return to the prison's door to go back to the holding cell, and they have to wait until a guard opens the doors for them.

Hillarious.

PS I forgot about the third door, the one that gives access to the road, just after crossing the "hatch"

Any enclosed area designated as shared is fair game for prisoners to exersize, work, or wander aimlessly in. If there is an area you don't want prisoners in designate it as staff only, or a specific sec level is you only wan tmin sec wandering there for instance. That is why the gaurds don't care, as far as they are concerned it's fine for those prisoners to be there. At least they are behaving themselves and not trying to run away, that means you hatch/airlock system in on point ;-)

Oh, thank you. I still have to learn a lot about micromanagement

As Lissa the Wicked Warden mentioned, you need a staff-only area if you're trying to set up a buffer zone. Otherwise, they'll wander around out there hoping to score contraband thrown over the fence. Research Deployment and cut off their access to the outer walls.

Now it's fixed. Everything runs smoothly.... more or less.

I had the same problem. I saw prisoners just walk by patrolling guards at the gate. Obviously this kind of frustrated me, but apparantly you ALSO have to mark this zone as a staff-only..

I dont know if they ever said this ingame, but I thought FREETIME meant access to: yard/canteen/cell/hallways, not outside the prison...

Yeah, I found the same solution as you but I forgot to update this old thread.

Even though it should be evident for your staff, you have to mark the outter grounds as staff only.

The only type of zone I don't know what's useful for is the Access only zone

it's access to anything marked "shared"

mouse over it, it tells you exactly what it does

access only designates an area that you don't want people standing around in, they will not gather there and more importantly will avoid that route if other paths are possible

it should also be noted: "access only" is a secondary marker, you can make things both a specific prisoner rating (or staff only) AND in addition to that, also make it "access only"

In this way you create hallways or paths that people/prisoners are allowed to walk through (if needed) but are not allowed to stand around in aimlessly

It's realy good for traffic control, you'll have less prisoners just wandering aimlessly as they will need to go to specific places that they are allowed to hang out instead of just being anywhere they feel like it

So its still annoying how you have to REMARK the zone every time you made it smaller because you're building into it.

It gets kind of tedious

You created a new zone and cry that you have to make the new zone for how you want it marked....

Do you expect the game to read your mind? How does that work exactly? It should just magically know what you want the new room to be ahead of time?

"I made a new zone, I want it automatically marked as Staff Only"

vs

The number of threads about:
"Prisoners aren't leaving their cells anymore."
And I get busy finding out why that is the case, going through the usual "did you build a fence?"
"Show me a screenshot"
and blah blah
until we finally get to the solution, that they recently built a new corridor or zone and the game auto-marked it as staff-only.

The amount of trouble it saves me, that this feature DOES NOT exist is immense.

such sarcasm. I split a Staff-Only zone in half and because of that both zones aren't staff-only again.

time for me to unsub from this thread, because Kunovega roams here....

Exactly, you make new rooms and expect the game to read your mind

If it marked things staff only or anything by default you would have far more complaints about people not being able to figure out why their prisoners can't enter certain areas

Your logic is literally backwards
