How do I get well fed prisoners?
So after a long period of not playing since some of the early alphas, I've finally gotten back into the game. First off, I AM playing with the unlimited money setting on because I'm more interested in finding the balance of a working large prison atm. After I feel I have a thorough understanding of everything in a large scale, I'll drop back and start a proper game.

Currently, I have the majority of the prison up and running and I'm taking in prisoners about 30-40 everyday to fill capacity. Currently have capacity of 573 with 232 prisoners about half min and half med. I have several cell blocks planned to up capacity to about 1000+.

Everything is running very smoothly. I've adjusted the regime/etc to where everything is automated and rarely reaches 2! danger level. But there are a couple things giving me some trouble/confusion...

Namely I'm trying to improve reform class attendance and reoffending rate. I've got 3 one hour meal times with high/high which leaves everyone happy (food need satisfied) but for some reason I seem to generally have LESS than 10 prisoners claiming well fed. Quite confusing to me.

I'm also having trouble getting people to finish Foundation education and carpentry classes. The education Classes have slowly gotten better with large amounts of prisoners yet still seems low. Carpentry classes barely even have any interested prisoners though 23 have passed the safety class.

I have gone into the edit schedule and pinned the appropriate classes to proper times/rooms. I feel like I understand everything but attendance seems sparse in general. It's led me to the theory that improving reoffending stats could be what's needed.

Oh, and I only have 5 armed guards and they are in remote locations so that they are not causing suppression to the general populace. My understanding is their suppression extends around 15 spaces and not through external walls, in which they are QUITE far away and not affecting genpop. I've also set solitary times low as to not apply heavy amounts of suppression as well.

I've also been stomping on contraband, so there is not a lot of that going around. As well as been separating out the snitches/ex law to avoid trouble there.

Are there any other factors I'm missing/misunderstanding to get everyone well fed and reform class attendance up? Basically I'm thinking the well fed will help greatly to help achieve this.

Sorry for the long post. I've managed to Google everything else to get myself up to date with things but I can't seem to find much for well fed besides med/high or high/med food is needed but I'm at high/high THREE times a day lmao. Again, the food need is satisfied so the problem isn't something like needing more cooks, etc.

First your reform rate is effected by attendence/passing classes not the other way around. Attendence is based on over all hppyness.That said It seems you are doing the basics right. So it's possible the devit is in the detail. 1) 1 hour meals are good, but 2 hour meals are better. Adding a few phones, TV's and prayre mats will alow for somthing for prisoners to do afeter they are finished eating to top off any needs before class time.

which is 2) be sure work follows meals whenever possible. That well fed bonus only lasts so long (you said you were feeding high/high right?) make the best use of it by being sure they spend as much of that time as possible in class. Also when work falls right after either eat or Free Time prisoners will head to class an hour early if all thier needs are met.

bringing us to 3) be sure your classrooms are easily accessable from whereever they are before. If they are spending all thier time walking to class they are not paricipating (there a time spent in class % visable on prisoner durring thier class time)

If you have max security inmates, the ! increaseing in the morning is normal, they have loads of needs and have to fulfill those needs first. Max inmates would level up the danger faster, due to their offensive.

General education and carpentry are hard to pass, you would need MOD to increase inmate's chance to pass. Or have keep course running, inmates failed to pass the course would go back and try again. The workshop class is troubleing from only 1 foreman and have to put inmates with different work hours to allow more classes for foreman to teach.

Than, one hour eat hour is not enough, some of inmates have to walk for long time to the canteen, with only 1 hour to eat, inmates late for eat would have to give up what there're eating(and not satisfied from food). Also if the inmates got troubles on the way to eat (smelled something wrong by dogs or metel detector beeps, the mistake alert is often), would also missed the eating hour.

I'd tried for 3 one hour eat regime, but not successful, too many foods wasted and inmates had not safisfied from their food(without enough time to finish their meal). Also, 1 more meal have to import more food from outside, the road traffic is getting worse and have to spent more money to buy foods. Now, I've put 2 hour for eat and twice per day, inmates' are happy and I got no trouble from their foods.

I was originally running 2 two hour meals then I realized that they were all done eating within about an hour, so it didn't seem necessary for the extra hour. When I cut back to 2 one hour sessions, they were getting to hot for my comfort between meals, despite having high/high meals. That's why I settled on 3 one hour meals. I've watched them and they all finish eating and many are indeed using the phones and tvs.

Though I do understand many people add lots of amenities to different areas, I strongly care about the aesthetics. I only use items that I would expect to find in real world application. I've bent to the point of tvs in the canteen and prayer mats in each cell, but I would rather not do much more than that. I could never bring myself to put toilets and showers in a canteen or outside, etc. I did try adding a "restroom" just outside the canteen with several toilets to shorten the walk after leaving the canteen but I haven't noticed it being used at all lmao. They seem to prioritize the ones in their cells.

I do tend to follow eat with work but with an hour of free time in between to satisfy needs. The problem is I can't figure out why everyone doesn't seem to get the well fed bonus despite having 3 high/high meals.

I've tried to centralize classes and most facilities but I didn't realize the impact that travel might have on classes, as you say. I'll have to take a closer look at that and see if that might be the factor I've been missing. It's crazy how much fine tuning needs to be made to excel in this game lmao. It's not enough to simply satisfy needs anymore lmao

Actually I havent taken any max inmates just yet. Wanted to test the others first. I'm currently working on Max sec areas. But like I said, the danger lever rarely even touches 2!

But now that you're saying that and coupled with the point lissa made, I wonder if the foremans travel time would be impacting classes. I'll have to check into that as well.

I'll try going back to 2 two hour meals and see if that affects my well fed percentage. Though like I said, when I've watched they all seem to get their needs filled. I do see your point on any delays though. As well as delivery traffic.

My prison. Its an incredible reform prison rated 9/7/4/3 and I have yet to see anyone come close to the reform rate I get out of it.

Reoffend rate was 4% before enabling gangs, and now it is around 8% with gangs. I have extremely good attendance in my reform programs, but the prison is mostly MED sec with a little bit of Max and Min. Without seeing the OP's prison, I really can't make any comments on any possible improvements, but perhaps looking at my prison will help you gain some insight. I've tweaked and improved it for quiet some time with 140hours+ IRL time into this prison alone.

It houses almost 200 gang inmats (including all 3 gang leaders), is fully multi sec,right I've been intaking 10-20 gang member every day for over 50 days!) has events and weather, and all the other wistles turned on.

I understand a respect your feelings on the subject. I have 1 possible solution to your delema. I have started makeing deadicated 'rooms' off my canteen. I'll make a quiet study w/ prayre mats an book slelves. A room with a few pool tables, tv's and phones, and a bathroom. I don't put in a door though, just leave it an open space that will aloww me to zone them as 1 big canteen. I do somthing simalar with the yards intagrating inside and outside sections that I want to allow the prisoners to be able to access during rec time. FOr me this solved my asthetics issue, if not I understand, but I thought I'd put it out here.

I also kit out all my cells with e prayre mats (I'm sure some religions organization supplies them to my prison, much like bibles) radios (to boadcast the 'Beloved Warden's Propaganda' to all prisoners when they are in thier cell and wisper them to sleep every night) and toilet/ shower (because it cut down on droped soap incedents and there is way too much paperwok involved it those)

Spend some time watching them as they study. there are % for thier various 'study stats' You can't do anything about smart, but the others you can influence.

It's on like Donkey Kong! lol I will note that I am not on unlimited budget and have 40k+ cash flow most of the time.

Start with med and min security inmates is VERY correct, DON'T take max security before you can handle entire prison runs well. Max prisoners had $1000 for intake, but they have more "dangerous" special traits and troubleful "legendary", if max inmates unhappy, they would kill each other, even worse some of them may attempt to start a riot(and could expend to other security level wings). If max security inmates made a riot or daily murder, their pay for $1000 means nothing, we would suffering from more losses.

The traffic would get worse depend on how big and how many inmates in your prison. Bigger prison(as I made) and more inmates would consumes more food and need more meterials, for 3 meals per day, that's trucks have to tranport more foods for another meal. Further if you build more cells/dormitaries or facilities inside, the meterial and funiture would also transport by trucks, combime all truck and buses together, the road traffic would become a nightmare.

I'm using 3 MODs to deal with my current prison:
Road work: that splits prisoner buses and trucks at different lane, but the intake still been delayed for hours.(Before I tried the "road work" MOD, the prisoner buses may delay over 24 hours!)

Sorry for I had load of kills.......one night, the "legendary" had tried to start a riot in max security area, and my snipers had killed 8 of them(after inmates had killed 1 worker, I'd turn free fire ON) included that "ledendary", to prevent from riot.
I've treat my inmates too well, like running a school/college.......

@lissa - I do kind of like that idea. I might play around with that but I'm not sure I have the extra room around my canteens atm though I might try that with the upcoming max sec canteen.Thank you for that suggestion. I hadn't thought about that.

I am among those that feel I'm not building a hotel so they'll have to deal with just mats in my walls lmao. Only maxsec and deathrow get all the (vital) amenities and that's only to restrict their movement :P

I'm assuming you mean watching them during class? I'm not quite sure what you mean but I'll play around and see if I see some stuff I can tweak. Thanx
@bellwoody - Yeah I know maxsec are trouble makers lmao. I remember a lot about the game from early days. I'm just trying to get caught up on all the systems. So far everything is going rather smoothly.

I've been tweaking the road systems. A strategic layout of "road rooms" is VERY significant. I wish I would have known that from the start as my road areas would be different but it's too late for such large modifications so I'm just going to go with it for now. I did hit a point where traffic was backed out of the screen but with some adjustments I've managed to get it back to bearable, but in hindsight I see a portion of that problem was food intake. I've noticed a LOT of trucks tend to come in with only 1 or 2 items on them. I hope they fix that. Logically there would be full trucks of stuff if there is a high stream of supplies coming in.

I'm not looking to use any mods atm. The only one I'd even consider is the one to add literacy to bookshelves since maxsec and deathrow aren't able to reach a library. That's only because I feel that should be in the game and I'm quite surprised they have not linked those together yet.

Edit: I also haven't had an issue with snitches and ex law since I've been calling my CI's during intake and the snitches and ex law never even make it into genpop lmao

Oh I don't ever play on unlimited funds, I took that durring some issues I had with my exports (it piled up because of some major construction I was doing and ther were no trucks coming in empty) I parole between 20 and 30 inmates a day, and intake 60 (20 of each sec lvl dayly- neither of which shows on that balance sheet) so I make more money then I can spend. It might have been a prison flip though-- I like starting with 1m for larger concept prisons where I lock intake on max for all secs at day one-- of which that was one.

Yes watch them wile they attend class, note if they are waiting patiently in thier seats at the start of class, and what each of those starts are.. you can only see it durring the program time. That will give you an ide of what your issue might be. Also -- and this is a VERY common mistake, do NOT reschedual your classes. Prisoners will cycle into them at the start of the lessions so often the 1 shot classes will look like no one is going to attend, but they do. The long classes though will have issues if you reschedual with prisoners shifting between sessions and cause a high failure rate.

@lissa - Yeah I'm checking into that. Thanx for the class tips. I did edit my original post with screenshots. Feel free to make suggestions. I'm definitely not liking my overall layout now that I'm expanding beyond the initial area. I might actually start another prison and aim for some smarter layout decisions. I like a lot of things with that prison but a lot of things lot like last minute decisions. I know I can do better, but hey, this is my test and I've definitely learned a lot and I think I'm just about caught up on the systems.

Plus, I just got the update today and for some reason I'm not seeing the hot water items. Not quite sure but that might have just ruined my prison anyway lmao.

I'm still a little fuzzy on what exactly the reschedule button is supposed to do but I haven't really been using it.

Is that mod just for the 2 items? I have mixed feelings about them affecting religion and sleep but I might use them anyway. Though not all of my couches are against walls lmao.

Yea just the 2. I like to keep things simple. The couches have better comfort then benches so I set them in the yard 'studies' I make I don't like them in the canteen because they will sit on them to eat and that just seems icky. It's especially nice for late at night when prisoner are tired. The I don't ever notice them using the bookshelves for spirituality as prayre mats raise it faster, and I almost always have them near each other. The rational is that the bookshelves include a bible.
It looks like you have a good start on things. I'll leave you with a few notes, you can take them or leave them as you like.
1) Shower rooms are dangourous for higher sec lvls and generally less effecient, in cell showers are much better for mornings and I prefer to make a shower room in my yard to fufil thier needs throughout the day especially after exersizing in the yard.
2) common rooms are really not that useful, you will find designated time like yard or canteen is better as it keeps prisoners confined to a specific area rather then wandering your prison.
3)you don't need a bench spot for every prison, 1/3-1/2 is usually good if you have 2 hour lunch and other things for them to do. This will feel up space for some of those other thing;-)
from there it's just about finding what works for you.. happy wardening!!
