Prison perimeter and fences
I was trying to create a prison and I started thinking how to make the perimeter.

Using a fence was my first idea, since it is cheap. However it can be easily broken and prisoner can also climb.

So I tried using the perimeter walls, but they are far from cheap, and it will be a pain to decostruct them in order to expand.

Fence with barbed wire has both negative traits, since the barbed wire costs 200$ per square wich is exactly how much the perimeter wall costs.

What solution do you suggest and what do you do usually?
Until now my prison was usually a huge single building, but I would like to try a different apporach

Always use fences at first when I have no money. Then walls and when I'm sure of the size of my prison (or reach the map limit, I build perimeter walls.
EDIT: But when your prison reaches a certain level of price, sell it and you'll have some more spare money to begin the next one.

There's technically no map limit, you can keep buying land expansions (at least until you exceed the capability of your computer and it starts to lag)

In the beginning I always use fences... ...I don't add barbed wire unless I'm bored (I do it eventually)

I figured that if you build two fence walls parallel to each other with a space in between, and designate that space as "Staff Area" prisoner's rarely try to escape... and I always add a couple of staff doors in case they escape so my officers have a way to chase them instead of going all the way around to find a door

I also have patrols along the border.

It is safe, until I have money to build a perimeter wall..and again I don't build it all at once, it's expensive. and i keep the fences, as an extra layer of security - because they can also climb perimeter walls but slower...

Nice idea.

I have one border fence with another farther in mud in-between the two to slow it down made it staff only and put sniper towers. costly but scalable it also helps against tunnels!

How far apart (roughly) do you make yours?

Perimeter wall, concrete tile, 8 spaces of whatever you want, concrete tile, perimeter wall

Two perimeter walls with a concrete walking path lining each wall (for guard patrols) and a total of 10 spaces between the walls. If you want to get fancy you can make it look like a road around your prison and top both walls with barb wire so they are harder to climb.

The gap eliminates all thrown contraband and the double perimeter wall slows down tunneling enough that the (dog) patrols in between the walls will catch them

Here's a really simple starting prison concept, the only way in is the main gate on the main roads. The top and bottom of the road have snipers

The entry and exit use a multi chamber airlock system, long enough for a truck to fit between with the gates closed (all gates tied to a single door control so the door controller only opens one at a time)

Main offices, storage, security, delivery, garbage, exports, armory, staff room all secluded in central protected zone. Everything comes in and out through here. (note there's no psychologist/therapy office here, I put those with medical and class rooms inside the prison itself, these are the offices no prisoners need to ever visit)

I've done prisons much larger than this, but this is a really basic starting layout before customizing it to be whatever I'm in the mood to make.

Unless you're playing on hyper difficulty or something, fences are quite ok, as long as you keep good patrols and don't angry them too much, also mostly supermax sec prisoners will try to jump over the fence, the rest will hardly do it. If you feel it's too weak and they will all jump over and escape, build 2 tiles of fences with 2 tiles in-between with armed patrols, it should be more than enough against escapes. If you're not hurting for money but can't quite afford perimeter wall, use concrete/brick walls instead, they are a little bit better than fences. If you're worried about contraband build 2 layers with 10 tiles in-between them, thrown contraband can get in through fences, walls and perimeter walls equally.

Source: I have had several successful prisons with only a single tile of fence and I hardly have escapees (but have lots of shanking problems), almost all escapes happen through tunnels, not jumping over the fence, so it's fairly safe, I only bother with perimeter wall after the first or second prison sell, or if I want to take supermax and transfers, they can be messy to deal with and are vastly more likely to climb fences/walls.
