You may want to try a large jail door, alot easier on multiple prisoners.
You can lock open at all times and then put drains below this so no water escapes.

Hope this helps :prisoner:

Edit:personally I would also remove that central wall you have within the shower room and turn the shower heads the other way around(fix to the back of the other wall). More room to move around.

I mentioned that in your other post, but showers are a major hot spot for prisonners, meaning they tend to start fight there a lot, and a lot of it is due to the fact they are all cramped together during shower time and shoulder each other until someone feel insulted and throw a punch...

I've learned for experience it's important to have large open space shower area, if possible with no doors. If possible, multiple medium sized showers spreaded around a block is better than a single massive one. It's way easier to control a shower with 10 prisonners than one with 50 prisonners packed. Failing that, having cells with individual showers solve the problem completly, but it requires some amount of planning.

An other option is to not put shower time in your regime, but replace it with free time. It's a double edged sword, but it means prisonners will shower pretty much when they feel like it, meaning less traffic at the showers(less people go there at the same time). It also means though, that not knowing when the problems may occur may cause a bit of randomness, as you can have one snitch-ex law enforcement guy deciding to shower at the wrong time, and get jumped on by 3 dangerous criminals.

aha... but if i dont have the walls i cant have 200meter area cuz how do i get many ppl in it?

I got fed up with the fighting a long time ago so just give each one their own shower on the way out of their cell. Solves a tonne of problems if takes a bit more room overall!

I personally wouldn't recommend changing shower to freetime as they may have a poo before taking a shower, run out of time then get really pee'd off they haven't cleaned themselves leading to more rage overall. Each to their own though :)

You can also put showers in your yard to combat mucky prisoners at other times of the day, also shown in screenshot.

I also came up with an idea of design for cells which is 8 square cells in L shapes, with the usual 6 coupled with 2 on the side to put a shower head and a drain. You can put thoses side by side and while it kinda removes the room you would put a third cell in, the fact you will remove the need of dedicated shower rooms will in the end probably make you gain space. I still need to test that design at some point, but the idea is there.

Just add a shower head and a drain in every cell and don't even have a shower room. Just have 1 hour of luckup before you start the day and they will deal with the toilet and shower need.

I've tried my new design of L shaped cell with a shower head and drain. They work like a charm, and while they take more room, the room saved on not building showers is probably equivalent, so it's a good trade-off in my opinion, and it completly removes the liability of common showers.

So right now, the only hot spots are canteens... I really wish I would find a way to make them space efficient while keeping the prisonners in line inside and around them. I know I could theorically remove all the tables and only put one and just benches for the rest, but that doesn't seem esthetatically pleasing to me, and also, it feels cruel. I guess different eating schedule for different security levels would somewhat helps, but it seems unpractical...

yeh the trade off for efficient showers over a little more room in definitely worth it imo. :)

I've found that no matter what, canteeens are gonig to be your biggest room(bar yards if ybuld those indooors) as it makes sense to feed as many prisoners as possible. Unless of course you do smaller ones for each security level or try to stagger them as you've mentioned. you can set it up so that your cook are going 24/7, constantly making food to send out and and fit in 4-5 feeds in a day if some prisoners eat at night. This can lead to issues with efficient pickup of ingredients or having a solid work schedule to not only make money but hold classes everyone can visit. It's a tricky balancing act at times. I usually just bite the bullet and go for big canteens and save space in other areas :prisoner:

i have plenty of pics of canteen designs if you wanna check them out for some tips although I tend to use a pretty standard pattern design, nothing too fancy..lol.

some pics plz?

No probs.

This one caters for 96 prisoners max:

could be 1 space smaller but the kitchen needs it as that is compact.

This beast caters for 432 prisoners max:

And one in 3D for banter :D

Crickey, that's some huge canteens you have there... The idea of having 450 prisonners in the same spot scares me though. They do look pretty nice though. I have an actual layout which is a bit ugly yet serviceable and usually serve a max of 100 prisonners at the same time. Seeing I have protective custody prisonners with a different regime, it's never exactly 100, which helps a bit. Each canteen is its own building coupled with a kitchen. They are usually in a central location between cell blocks, close to a yard and to various others buildings prisonners visit often.

My canteen+kitchen are enclosed in a 21x21 space. Also I favor regular doors to jail doors, seeing there is never an occurence where I feel I need to lock up a canteen. That would be inconvenient seeing the huge traffic. Besides, I don't know, I guess I don't want my prisonners to feel stressed when they eat. Lot of my prisonners pass a lot of time outside when walking between buildings and zones, only coming back to cellblocks for natural needs, showers and sleep.

It's interesting for me to see a prison complex which is mostly an indoor thing.

Thanks Zephyr. I've moulded these designs from hundreds of hours play so they usually work pretty well. I'm a bit obsessed with efficient space so I pack as much as I can into the space as i likw to build big. I also tend to throw loads of guards in at meal times which usually keeps the peace. :)

I had a look too see if you had any screenies but alas, there were none :( :P

The reason I use double jails doors is to allow better flow of prisoners. They are actually locked open 24/7 so the prisoners can come and go as they please. Used to use single doors but when the canteens started getting real big, I was getting big traffic jams which pee'd off the prisoners and they would start fighitng at the doors. Hungry little devils have no patience! lol...

Great thing about prison architect is there is many ways of building prisons that can all be successful. Really is a great game :)

You don't need to increase the room size, you can have showers in a room that is 3x1 if you wanted to.

The below picture shows top left, 'standard' 3x3 call with toilet, shower and drain in one spot. Top middle, "Cramped" 3x1 cell with just a bed and a toilet/shower and below larger more luxury cells

I don't have a shower room. In fact it is still asking me to make one for the "Basic Detention Centre" grant.
