Yeah just hoping to avoid free time
Prisoners can access the shop anywhere.
I've had a shop in my canteen, I've had it outdoors, I've had it in a common room and I had one in my yard. They all worked just fine.

The only time I ever had a non functioning shop is when my PC were running it on one side and GenPop was on the other. Somehow nobody ever came to buy, haven't figured out why yet. Quite possible that the behavior has been fixed in the meantime, I haven't checked any time recently.

For need satisfication the shop isnt a plus, because every need can be easiely covered by other stuff.
I think the distance wont affect the shopping behavior of your inmates. So you can put it everywhere, it will work the same. And it only work on worktime. Minimum are 2 prisoners to run it.
Actually the main point of a shop is, that it encourage more inmates to work (especially workshop) This can be even done with a unmanned shop, which is 1x1 big.

yeah this would be exploiting.

Distance effects everything in this game. Do you rally want your prisoners wandering 1/2 way around your prison for a candy bar when they could top off all your needs in that time. Also having it off the yard allows then to eat on yard time, rather then only free (yard is much more contained and manageable, so I alway consider it preferable). Yes you need a staggered regime schedual (I use those anyway)

Shops are great for filling in the blank spot in your prison design. They are great for the nutrition grant, and even if you expand rapidly and forget to hire more cooks, or need addition rec items in the yard. If you want to check out what shops can do try my prison:

I normally build a few shops. The prisoners that want to buy things do not need to walk to one specific place, just which one is nearest, and it also creates a few more prison jobs.
