Question 2 = I will try to find a good YouTube video I once observed, as I had problems understanding how to expand rooms when I first started playing. In the mean time, you might want to go to YouTube and try looking yourself (if you have not tried YouTube yet).
Edit to add ...
I don't think this is the exact video I saw before, but looks appropriate.
Watch what this user does to expand an existing enclosed area (thus removing the wall in between), versus building a new enclosed area immediately adjacent to an existing enclosed area (thus keeping the wall in between the two areas).

Also, remember that when a Room type you want to build has a requirement to be "interior," then you must use the "foundation" build button to create the enclosed area as interior.
When you draw a Room, you hold down the left-mouse button and drag it around the area you want designated as that type of room. Do the same thing, but use the right-mouse button to remove/delete the designated room type.
Does that make sense?
I adjusted some of the wording in my original post. Hopefully that helps.
Foundation can be a little dificult at the begining i'll give you that, but you get the hang of it really quick
Can I ask a different question please? In the carpentry apprenticeship program, I've got as far as needing to make 10 superior beds. That doesn't seem to be happening so do I need to change some equipment for that? I also have a single red triangle/exclamation point in the workshop but hovering over it doesn't give me any further information. Thoughts please?
not that difficult.
as for carpentry, this one is pain.
1. have the workshop basics programme running always.
2. after you have some population who work there, start running the higher programme to teach carpentry.
3. your workshop should have 1 of each workshop machine at the very least.
