How do I build foundations without destroying internal walls?
Hi,

This isnt about it destroying adjacent walls.

I'm building huge sections of large indoor prisons.

There are normally several problems with that if you build the foundation first:

1. I will need to play the game for a LONG time to accrue the funding to lay the foundations due to income rate.

2. Its dark. You have to run power cables all over the foundations to light up all the lights. This itself has two problems. By the time I've built the innards of the prison, most of the cables and lights are in the wrong place. You can untick auto lights, but then its back to the problem of it being dark.

3. I don't want to attract all my janitors away from performing their other critical duties in other parts of the prison to mop the floor of a building that isn't being used. I can't make it no-access because I need the builders in there.

To get around all 3 of the above issues, you simple construct as much as you can before building the foundations. However, and I'm not sure if this a bug, but its extremely frustrating, when you build the foundations over the whole thing when you finally have enough money, it wipes out ALL of the walls you just spent hours placing. Due to the way the game works, building the foundations first isn't practical. Does anyone know a way to turn of automatic demolition of your prison when you build foundations?

don't over lap the new foundation

If you already have a wall with foundation, why are you building a foundation over it? Adding more foundation is added to the outside.

If all you did was build walls with no foundation, they have to come down or you can't put a floor/foundation under it.

So yea, if you want buildings you lay foundation first, you can't build a foundation under something without tearing it down first

only use the foundation tool on the ground ties you don't want the walls. remember to use them under doors and reach your pre-built walls or weird walls are formed.

I don't know how is this "practical" since you will have to meticulously tap tiny areas of foundation on pause for it to be good, but if you insist on building the walls first, this is how you do it

why don't you befriend the planning mode more?

Thank for your replies.
Okay it sounds like its not possible. I had used the planning tool, I just wanted to stage the construction, so I built the inner walls of the prison before the foundations. I was hoping the foundation tool just put external walls and a roof over the top of the whole thing. I didn't realise it tore down all of the walls inside the net. I thought this was a bug, but if its designed to do this then so be it. Thanks for the advice :)

You can lay all the walls based on your whole plan area (I do this when I want to use walls other then concreate) then go in and paint your foundation around them. If you go over the walls it will remove them, so be careful. Do not put in doors though, that will cause issues. When they finish a section it will just add the floor and it'll be tagged as indoors.

but if you don't put it under doors, the walls will be spawned around the door!

1 door leading to the planned expansion area is all there should be for this build method. You need to be able to paint the floor like it was 1 big contounus area, around the walls (any wall you go over will disappear so treat it like a coloring book.) doors inside that area will call issues. If you put in the doors first it it will build walls near them and block off door ways. You can run utilities early though if you like.
