What should I prepared for the criminally insane
Hi.

I need some ideas about planning for criminally insane prisons.

Except the special needs, should I let them to join the normal workshop, class, chapel etc?
Or should I create those for them separately? How many kinds of needs they will propose?

Thanks.

depending on the number of Insanes, hire the appropriate number of psychiatrists. The Criminal Insane Grant requires 10 Insanes and 2 psychiatrists, I think that's a good ratio to follow (1 psychiatrist per 5 insanes)

Always upgrade the psychiatrist's office furniture, depending on how many sessions they've done, a new furniture unlocks, it helps treat patients more effectively.

Planning of the psych ward is a little bit different than the normal cells, you do need a lot of space since the minimum requirements for each padded cell is 5x5......also i suggest make the psychiatrists office 5x5 as well because as i said you ll be adding new furniture.

Make sure you have a decent number of Orderlies..... also deploy a couple of them in the Normal Prison, in case if any of the inmates promotes to insane an orderly will already be there to take him to his padded cell.

Normal prisoners promote to Insanes fast , or it seems like it because your gen pop is usually high. In order to promote, or get Insane, they must have done something really wrong so they will require Padded Solitary immediately - make sure you have extra of those. Same thing for the normal padded cells, have extra empty ones in case of promotions - which means you have to close the Insane Intake at sometime and control it this way.

And they don't work at all, it seems so. Be sure of your security level, they go ANYWHERE and do... anything. I almost lost one (had to reload) because a worker let a door somewhere to go to pee, during a construction, and this insane guy took the door and sneaked out behind the door ; all you could see was a jail door walking alone to the exit.
So, be careful. They ARE crazy.

Do I need to plan a visitation room for them?

its up to you they are like everyone else

the are not hard to play, the only hard thing for me is when normal inmates turn to Insane and I have to keep on building padded cells......a Padded Holding Cell with a couple of bunk beds and toilets becomes handy until I build the cells - else you see them wander around your prison, and pee/poo on the floor.

else, I agree, they are like everyone else, and in case something turns bad you have the orderlies chasing them for a syringe shot which calms them down - the psychiatrist sessions also calm them down.

if they need Literature, I don't think a library is the way to go since the Insanes cannot work in it - add a bookshelf in each padded cell it will solve the problem.

they do need Luxuries, I have no clue how to deal with it, building a shop should be a mistake because the Insanes cannot work in it and I don't want normal inmates in the psych ward area.

you dont have to worry about Clothing, if you already have a laundry somewhere, the clothes will reach them.

the Psych Ward is an entirely different prison, make sure they don't get in contact with normal inmates.

Thanks for your information.

I plan to build 1% of my cells as padded, hoping that's enough.

For shop, maybe you could build one at the boundary, making other prisoner works for those cannot.

I have caught my Insane cons participating in Behavioural Therapy sessions rather than perfectly good Psychiatrist Sessions.

Insane cons seem to behave a lot like my Mothers. They need a special kind of cell and they have different approaches. A Mother will always fulfil her beby's needs first and doesn't work.

I think I still need to build a list of reform programs for all what the insane want.

Must: Psychiatrists
Maybe: Alcoholics Group Therapy, Pharmacological Treatment of Drug Addiction, Behavioural Therapy, Spiritual Guidance
No: Workshop Safety Induction, Carpentry Apprenticeship, Kitchen Safety and Hygiene, Foundation Education Program, General Education Qualification

Am I right?

There was many debates on what they or dont and also many wikis say wrong.

Visit - YES, I'm using table for families. CI inmates got straight way from the yard through CI zoned outdoor area to the parole room with table to allow "family" visit. (but its not proven that booth disallows it). Visitors got to pass entry door, staff only area, shared area inside prison and then to the parole room via staff door + visitor door.

Wellbeing programs - YES and its important to let them. Do treat all addictions and let them go to behavioral therapy when triggered aggressive behaviour (they got to misconduct and punch someone to show up as interested/queued in this therapy)

Spiritual guidance - YES and its a thing to keep their "% of time spent on" factors at good level coz its easy to pas and they will repeat the program.

Floral therapy - YES and that was surprising. Its Intermediate program and their lack of concentration make it hard to pass but they do attend it (and steal loads of trovels :) from the garden). Just buid a flower garden 5x5 somewhere near the yard. One metal detector with a bin makes it not so dangerous as they prefer to drop contraband to avoid being caught.

In my first approach I was dissapointed. I managed to hold 40 CI inmates for their full sentence and couldnt hit 10 psych consultations. They werent interested in spiritual guidance like at all and less than 20% went to the psychiatrist ONCE. Then I realised ...

SUPPRESSION and freedom abuse.
1. Take away all guards
a) reduce the Yard to the reasonable size, put the lake on the yard to lower the yard-tiles count to stop that guards roaming there (the more yard tiles the more natural guard tendency to roam around)
b) no guards on the cell blocks / common room / canteen - use Orderlies
c) even drop those dog patrols around the building
2. Reduce free time
a) use program/lockup regime instead of program/freetime and just givem one hour free time + 2h yard time.
b) equip cells with: punchbag, bookshelf, praying mat, pet bird and the shower to make the lockup time nicer
My regime uses 2 blocks of [4h program/lockup , 1h lockup], 3 x mealtime, 2h yard, 5h sleep
After all those tunings they started to use programs like crazy and they STARTED to attend every possible psychiatrist consultation possible. Not to mention that crazy flower garden program with 6% overall success.

My reoffend rate dropped to 12% with CI inmates only.
