How to disable dog barking?
Is there any way to disable the guard dog barking sound? It's more often than not driving my own pet dog crazy.

In some games it's a simple matter of replacing a single sound file with an empty file with the same name but here all sounds are compressed in a single file.

Does anyone know a way to disable it or unpack / alter the big sounds.dat?

As of writing of this I'm running build 13j

You can open the sounds.dat file with 7-Zip (and probably other archive apps as well). From there you can see the 3000+ sound clip files. There are several beginning with ‘dog'. I presume that one could replace them with .ogg files that contain either silence or your choice of sound, and rewrite the file (back up the old one first). I haven't tried it, but sounds reasonable unless the file CRC is being checked by PA.

A way better way is to just edit the sounds.txt file and replace the entries for dog sounds with
SOUNDNAME silence_1sec SOURCETYPE 0
so instead of a bark, you year a one second silence .ogg file :)

Replacing both DogDetectNarcotics_1[a-f].ogg and DogDetectNarcotics_Distant_1[a-f].ogg with the one second silence seems to have resolved it.

That's what I thought at first as well but if you open the sounds.dat with notepad++ or similar results in garblegarble even though find (and replace) seems to find "dog" even if it doesn't seem so.

Where did you pull up the sounds.txt instead of sounds.dat?

<edit> ps. Thank you both for your answer!

Sorry for necroposting but how do you "rewrite" the sounds.dat file to make it work? I just ended up killing all sound in the game lol
I did make a backup of sounds.dat though.
