PSA: Staff needs still not working propperly
After checking out the changelog of Update 13, I played the open beta with staff needs enabled. Needless to say, the old issue with food-trais is still not resolved. The turnover of trays might have been improved but half of my staff is angry because there are not enough clean trays in the staffroom.

Tried everything, including only allowing one staffroom to serve food, building a kitchen next to the staffroom and link it via the logistics-menue, and hiring a butt-load of cooks.

It used to be a problem for me in the past, but in my current prison, staff food is hardly an issue. Are you sure have enough cooks to deal with the workload?

If you are using staff canteens you might want to have a look at this.
Its a mod I made which fixes the issue with dirty food trays not being taken and cleaned.

Working fine for me as well. Not using any mods.

The issue IS fixed in Update 13, and if you still have it, it might be a problem with not having enough cooks or something of that sort, as Paikia said.

I have 150cooks for 400 prisoners and 200 Guards. How is that not enough? The cooks are idling and, well, getting pissed because they don't get their clean trays

Yeah, that should be much more than enough. There has to be a bottleneck somewhere. Maybe the number of sinks, then? Another factor is the distance from the staff room to kitchen, although with so many cooks, it shouldn’t really matter. I’d try adding another sink or two to the kitchen, and another table at the stuff room, or even another serving table, see if it makes any difference.

Tried some optimization:

I have tried every trick I know. I've even fired and rehired all 200 Cooks, becasue they were upsed and not working efficiently.

Ugh, I might be a little confused, but shouldn't your staff members have tables between the benches, to eat at? I mean, I know they'd sometimes take their plates and eat while seating on a couch, so a table might not be a strict requirement, but given staff food is an issue here, I'd try installing some tables.

They do not. Before optimization the canteen had tables, but cooks walk slowly through tables, so the tables was the first thing to go when trying to optimize it.
You can see a few trays on the benches too. Whenever there are trays available, whoever gets them sits down as usual.

Edit: It's the same with the prisoners. In my prisons they only have benches and there's a table somewhere to fulfil the room-requirements

This should not matter. Observe the video, you will see cooks picking up trays from the floor, sofa's, tables. Also modded chairs or whatnots should work fine. Staff can and will eat on a chair without a table, same like prisoners who also don't really need tables in the canteen to eat at.

Kk, tables aren't really necessary, then. Well, I'm fresh out of ideas, sorry.

All I can say for sure, is that since update 13, I don't have a problem with cooks clearing out dirty trays, or any other problems related to staff food, for that matter. The bug *has* been fixed.

Since everybody else was not having any problems with staff needs, especially the trays, I kept on experimenting to see if there’s a fix for my situation (300 guards & 200cooks). So I have now what I deem a “reasonably well” working staffroom. It seems that – contrary to previous versions of Prison Architect – more serving tables now have a positive effect.
