[Solved] Staff food need / Cleaning trays
So as several players have noticed. There's a bug in the beta that prevents guards from fulfilling their food need.

Reason:
The limited amount of food trays in a staff canteen don't get cleaned. So the staff canteen runs out of clean trays for guards to use. Without clean trays, guards can't pick up a meal.

Cause:
Only cooks (and prison labour) clean dirty trays. Cooks are automatically assigned to a kitchen and a kitchen is assigned to a (prisoners) canteen. However, a kitchen can't be assigned to a staff canteen.

Solution:
Build an unassigned kitchen. The game will automatically assign one of your cooks to it and he'll clean trays in the staff canteen(s). If you need more cooks cleaning trays in your staff canteen, add an unassigned kitchen. Cleaning will also go faster up if you put one or multiple sinks in your staff canteen.

How:
Build a standard kitchen (1 cooker, 1 freezer, 1 sink). Go to the logistics screen. There you'll see a yellow dotted line connecting the kitchen to a (prisoners) canteen. When you draw a line from the kitchen to a staff canteen, it won't create a connection but instead delete the connection to the (prisoners) canteen. The game wil now also put a warning sign over the kitchen, saying the kitchen is unassigned, but of course, that's what you want.

I realise this is just a workaround, but it's a solution until the bug gets fixed

You need Murgh's tweaked staff food mod:

Combine that with vending machines for staff to fall back on when there aren't enough clean trays:

You'll never have hungry staff again :)

And you can also use my recycling mod to spawn some extra dirty foodtrays from the garbage to help things out. No need to have an unassigned kitchen with a warning sign.

This doesn't solve the problem that trays don't get cleaned

Using those two mods combined I never have less than 40 clean trays on staff serving table at once. So in a way you're wrong :)

You're correct in saying though there is a clean tray bug vanilla. Murgh's mod does actually help that a lot especially with his recycling mod as he mentioned. Even the rare occassions you are out of clean trays the staff will just use vending machines and never go hungry so the clean trays aren't even a problem anymore so nothing to worry about.

I don't see any problems. My staff serving tables (4 of them) are filled nicely with trays and food, everybody gets satisfied and the staff needs for food have dropped to zero if you have a well organized prison.

this actually works, thanks for posting this buddy.

Totally works, and smoothly enough that it almost can be rationalized as a mechanic. Thanks!

Thx, man! It worked. Nice job!

I don't have a staff canteen, just stuck a serving table in my staffroom. Seems to be working fine so far, with staff getting fed and no dirty trays hanging around.

Yeah, I used staff canteens in my first prison but just used serving tables in staff rooms in my second. Strange thing: they will not use a table and bench in a staff room; only a couch, and only if they picked up the food there and not the canteen. They'll take food to a chair in a decommissioned office far away rather than use a staff room bench.
AI isn't good at choosing where to do things, going from one room to a far off room when there was one closer, so having more stuff in fewer rooms reduces travel.

Thank you. That helped. This stupid game works from Update to Update less good

You can also just put a sink in a staff room and serving table. If you do not want to build a canteen. Your workers will sit on sofas in front of a TV. But for the trays to get cleaned in that sink you will need to hire some more cooks.

already did, that works quite good, the sink was very good, and i build a mini kitchen with one cook next to the staff room

Folks ending up here from search engines might find this useful,

Dirty trays when not where they should be are taken to canteens and staff rooms. Then from the LINKED kitchen they are cleaned at the sink. If you have a massive pile of dirty dishes in a staff room then go into food delivery logistics and make sure the staff room is linked to a kitchen. You can shift click to multiple. You may need to manually do this. The game doesn't seem to automatically link staffrooms.
