Skull Shrines?

Is there a point to the skull shrines lit up by a single candle in each of the levels? Or are they simply cosmetic?
I’ve tried interacting with them & I’ve tried placing items on them, but to no avail.

You have to place a certain item on them (and no, it's not the skull of whatever poor sap you find along with every journal entry)

I read somewhere that you have to get certain scores on the arcade games & it’ll give an item to put on the shrines. I haven’t done it myself yet.

It's not certain scores or anything, but it has to do more with secrets, every minigame has something cyan in it and that means that it's a clue for the crystal skull.
