The gameplay is very fun, simple yet satisfying. Long story short, I had a blast playing through the first level solo and with a friend.
What I loved :
- Custom combos !! I love the fact that the monsters hit box are HUGE, you can even launch them while they're lying on the floor. Or just bash them senseless with down+strike*n
Once you know what your character can do, you can pretty much do whatever you want and go wild with your imagination. Freedom of playing how you want is, for me, the most important thing in a beat'em all.
- The feedbacks. Very satisfying. You can FEEL that you're destroying them. Love it !
- The overall gameplay is pretty cool. I love that it doesn't " smother " you with stupid rules like so many games theses days. You can jump on a ladder and grab it mid air for example. Then you can mash the jump key to go up really fast or just maintain the down button to slide ... well down ! That kind of mobility adds a layer of freedom that I love.
- Made it pretty clear that I loved the game design, but the " artistic direction " (?? for lack of a better word) is cool too. I mean I'm not a huuuuge fan of teenage movies or whatever but it still is nice to the eyes. Like I said in the facebook already, really loved Cassy's design. Nice to have a female character who's not overly sexy for no reasons at all.
- The score/notation system. The manual one is a brilliant idea. Really cool, I love it !! It's really fun to see just how far you can push the score ! It adds a lot to the thrill of the fight !!
What I " less loved " or plain didn't like :
- Aside from " fury type moves " and starting stats, all characters look the same ! I even thought that the throw was Brutal Joe signature but I could throw people as well with Cassy. Kinda strange but hey, more gameplay for me, not gonna complain. Still, I wish the characters could have more depth to their gameplay. To add some personal flavor to them, having their own " identity " so to speak.
- Speaking of special moves, Cassy's fury is a lackluster move. I mean, maybe I didn't get it ! But all I see is a move that deal moderate damage with a launcher at the end. And you can't even do it in small places, since you can't hit a wall without canceling the whole move and fall flat on your ass. I know you can change the direction you're hitting but still, I was kinda disappointed, I just use it for invulnerability frames it gives now. Pretty useful for those " horde " type events but that's it. I'll see about the other ones but Cassy level 1 fury is disappointing.
- Grenades can't hit monsters in the air. That's a shame ! I can still throw them on the floor or a wall to have my " combo finisher grenade move " but I wish I could throw one in the air and blow it to pieces.
- Something I really hate is the moments that " alter " the gameplay but in a very bad way. Like the boss fights for example. Fighting a walking wall of bricks is not fun at all. Everything you have is stripped from you gameplay wise. You just have to hit it the best you can and dodge the patterns. That's boring.
Same for the sequence on the roof the subway, when you have to dodge incoming ... light thingy (don't know the english word sorry). It's ok to have them, you want to change the pace ... I don't know why since I love killing monster all day long but ok why not ! But does it have to be so long? I mean I'm just dodging things and throwing monsters for instakills for a while. It gets boring real fast.
But maybe that's just me, a lot of my friends don't share that point of view. But as a gamer, I just hate it when I'm forced into something less good just for the sake of " change ". It's like saying " ok you bought this game for the custom combos then guess what? WE DON'T CARE ! Have a boring boss that just doesn't give a ♥♥♥♥ about what you want. Now evade patterns and only use some safe moves so you don't get hit. ". Freedom is what a beat'em all about. Get rid of that ... you're killing your own game. But again that's just my pov.
What I would love to have/see :
- It would be dope to be able to buffer the charged strike. Right now you have to whiff a move and even tho it doesn't put you in any danger, it kinda grinds down the combo possibility. If you could charge it " inside " the animation of other moves and be able to release it instantly after it'll be bad ass.
- I'd love to see each character with a " unique " move set. Brutal Joe could have lot of throws kinda like Max in Streets of Rage 2, Cassy can have the most striking moves I could easily see her pull some Tae Kwan Do stuff mixed with some dance moves = huge combo potential. Sean can be a gunslinger with bullets that can bounce off walls and juggle enemies or at least damage them. There was a great character who fight with guns but ... in melee. Look for " Face " (that's his name) in the game " Battle Fantasia ". And for Nathan, ........................ I dunno. Maybe a weird gameplay where you could mix (I mean he's the first in his chemistry class I hope !) different types of liquids to have special bombs. One that don't deal lot of damage but slows every enemies. Or an Ice bomb (pun not intended) with liquid nitrogen. And so on. It could create a really good team character. Since he could have a bomb that combo well with the three others. Brutal Joe can wreak havoc in the slowed enemies rank, Cassy can follow up with some bad ass air combo after a grenade that aoe launch every one and Sean break the ice (still not intended) with a flurry of bullets, instagibing every frosted enemy.
- A practice mode? We tried to find some combos with my friend (we did some nasty ♥♥♥♥ hahaha) but we were very limited with monsters respawn, bullets and grenades. It'll be super cool to have a special room when you can spawn at will one or more enemies and have infinite bullets/grenades/fury meter. There's a lot of potential in this game so it's kinda hard to find stuff when you have to wait in a certain spot for monsters bullets or grenades.
- Some kind of " helm breaker " move? Helm Breaker is the big ass sword strike Dante does in Devil May Cry when he's in the air. The one that makes him fall very fast to the floor with his sword. It'll be usefull since there's no move in Final Exam that allows you to quickly go back on the ground when you jump. I guess the air piledriver can do that but it wouldn't hurt to have both. It can be a special stomp, that hit grounded enemies.
- Wall bounce/Ground bounce? With the charged strikes? Could be dope.
- Bigger hitbox on the air throw if possible? Right now it's kinda hard to connect with it after the 3 hits air combo.
- A special taunt? Don't want to validate my combo, but still want to taunt my enemies !
And I guess that'll be all I can find at the top of my head. I'm just throwing a lot of random stuff here, but I don't want the game to lose it's identity. Final Exam must stay Final Exam and if you guys have a very precise idea of what it should be, that's cool.
Btw sorry for my english, not my native language.
Anyway, like I said I'll buy it day one and I'll probably make a video out of it to spread the love. Good luck on the release !
Cheers from a BTA fan.
Amazing review!
I agree with him/her!
Yeah im not buying this ♥♥♥♥
Just reading the "Amazing Review" in post #3, first words : "First I'm gonna start by saying I'll buy the game day one." should have give you a clue... :(
What are you exactly complaining about? Developer not being so kind to give free full games to everyone?
If you liked the game you got to be prepared to help the developers by buying it. It's common sense. And it's only 10€ !! Stop being so greedy and/or stupid asking for free full game that never existed and stop harrassing people with some promise they never made.
