On Windows 10, only able to start game using Windows XP mode
I'm on Windows 10 and when I click Play from Steam, I get the following options:

- Play Shadow Warrior
- Safe Mode
- Play Shadow Warrior (Windows XP)
- Safe Mode (Windows XP)

The interesting thing is that the first 2 options don't work for me, but the 3rd one works. I'm able to play just fine but am just curious whether anyone knows why I'm only able to launch it using XP mode? Thank you.

I use Win10 myself and can start it normal without any problems.

XP mode is less taxing on your system. What are your specs?

First ones will work only if videocard has hardware support of DX11.

Thanks -- so am I compromising graphics by running in XP mode (even though I'm running in ULTRA)?

XP mode is actually a DirectX 9 graphics. The other one(usual) is DirectX 11. Basically, they look the same. Though due to some bug there's no rain at one important moment in DX11 version. On the other hand, DX11 has two more boss fights.

Thanks all for your help. So my PC is normal with GTX 860M, and dxdiag shows DX version = 12. So what do I need to do in order to run it with DX11?

dont know if right, sometimes if you setup a new Pc and are installing games, some of the games dont need the older DX versions, so your pc/steam ignore it, download and install them for your self or install a game over steam that need it.

I believe your GFX card supports it. Maybe your integrated GPU doesn't and it's defaulting to that. From NVIDIA control panel force the game to run with the high performance NVIDIA processor to ensure that doesn't happen. You should be able to look up the exact process of how -- I'm not really able to right now

I think I got it. Under the game dir there is a dx11 subdir and it has the dx11 version of the game.
Thanks all for your help :)

its possible that the intel graphics card is running the game as the main, try to force it to start on the gpu, its a mobile one though so i doubt its gonna be much better.

Awesome, I'll skip the two extra boss fights and have rain work on during that important moment as a bonus!

EDIT: Just finished the game, I'm guessing the important moment was at the end of the game where hoji dies and his sister cries for him which is the rain...?
