You don't say how early in the game it is but you might try splitting into more groups. It could well just be too early in the game to defeat Bluejaws, though.
At least the game lets you keep all your formations and daily/weekly magazines when you restart in hard mode. There's no need to solve those guild tasks again unless you're trying to complete everything in the game.
Try a different formation, there are some where people stand in such a way that the laser has a very small chance of hitting more than one.
Also is it the case that a few points of difference in the defense stat can make a huge difference in terms of the amount of damaged received from an attack? I had two unions, one with a Defense of... 11 or 12, and one with a defense of 8 or 9, and with the union with the higher defense, lazerbeam was doing maybe 80 damage a hit, whereas with the other union it one-hit KO'd them.
Maybe he just crit'd, I don't know.
I did notice something similar with the fire idol and mystic defense, though. Shifting my party members and formations around to boost M. Def by two or three points made a huge difference.
The individuals getting attacked matter, too. If the fire idol's flare attack hits somebody with a strong MDef, it will do a lot less damage than if it hits somebody with a weak MDef - even if they are in the same union.
Oh, and one real good way to dodge the laser arms - don't let it shoot off in the first place. Hit that thing with paralyzation and it won't get to use it until it breaks out. (For rare monsters, that's at the end of every turn.)
