It is absolutely true that the mechanics are obscure and poorly explained. The gameplay is definitely unusual and won't be for everyone. It definitely takes some getting used to and it helps to have people explain it to you. There's a couple good guides on Steam, in fact.
But your profile says you have 4.3 Hours total on record. I guarantee you that while the first 5 hours of the game might not require a lot of strategy to get through, that is NOT the case later on. You probably barely made it out of the "tutorial"-ish section of the game. You will need to think a lot more carefully about later encounters and sidequests or you will get destroyed.
Like said above , the combat will become harder and your choices a LOT more important , just adding chars together will get you in trouble later , a LOT of it.
Then again , the game is really complex, he said it would take more +- 5 hours to get into it , well i would say that without a guide and the wiki you will take more than one play through to grasp it.
