I'd compare this to CoQ if anything
I've played a ton of CDDA, CoQ, a few similar games..... the depth of CDDA is insane. It can take a while to figure out how to do everything but I'd say read people's personal stories about their runthroughs... that's what got me interested.
And in terms of " you can just play it for free"- the same thing can be said about Dwarf Fortress. It basically depends on if you want to have the devs slowly make the game over time or make enough money to spend most of their time adding content.

I say it's like CoQ because it CAN be a deep RPG if you can learn to live long enough or it can be a "roguelike" where you die pretty quickly. Reading people's person gameplay experiences is what got me interested and I ended up spending hundreds of hours on CDDA.

You're comparing it to WHAT?!

Caves of Qud. Even though that's the common name for it somehow it's offensive to the poor steam censors.

You can't play Dwarf Fortress steam version for free. He added content and value to the game before they released it on steam. You can play the non-steam version that doesn't have the new features yes. It's also not open source.

What I'm saying is that you can play play all of these games for free. I'm just saying that if you got a ton of enjoyment out of them- buying the steam version is a way to finally give these people some money for the hundreds of hours of free gaming they've given us over the years.

Agreed. Yet it does need to be clear that it is a 'free' game. For long-time fans it's sick to actually donate and just have it in your steam library. but what I am more concerned about is people who never heard of this game before. Assuming that there is no free version to at least try before purchasing.

The only thing that the Steam edition Dwarf Fortress has over the free version is the tile set.
There are no added features that are not present in the free version of the game.

Only the tileset huh? Are you sure about that? Not gonna say it's a massive list, but that's just being dishonest.

Let me put it like this- as long as these devs are doing this stuff as a hobby- there will be less hours spent on the game. If the devs suddenly have enough cash to focus on the game- it benefits everyone who wants to see the game get more content. Put yourself in their shoes.

By all means, share your knowledge.
When you say massive list; does it only include these things?
Improved UI
Mouse support
New soundtrack

Because the "improved UI" comes with the tile set.
Mouse support is said to be implemented in the free version as well, might've already been added.
New soundtrack, sure, as long as you don't like the old one.

Apart from these, I must've missed the other "massive" improvements they've made that isn't available in the free version.
Only one of these is actually planned to be exclusive, which is the new soundtrack and even that might change.

Not saying people shouldn't buy this game. It's out crazy not to ask that devs get paid for their coding. If you like this kind of games, you'll get hours out of it. All I am saying if you are going to sell a free game and keep the game free while also selling it. That needs to be communicated. And it can not be free since it's open source.

If you are incapable of searching basic things let me tell you.

If you are unable to do a simple google search. It is massive UI changes., graphics (as you mentioned), music, and access to steam Workshop. Here let me quote myself "Not gonna say it's a massive list"

Now, what were we saying about C:DDA?

Edit:
"When you say massive list;"
I said
"Not gonna say it's a massive list,"
Lol?

I genuinely misread the first post and thought the censored words were something totally different. Didn't read it carefully until this morning and now I'm giggling like a schoolgirl.

Veep and zeeb, it looks to me like you're mostly talking past each other... it's getting a little overheated and I recommend just letting it go. Removed posts with inappropriate content and their replies.
