There are many menus, and they often have wildly different things you can do in them. This helps understand all the possibilities!
If you see a flaming eye, don't ever engage it or the gamer RGB dogs will eat you.
Starting at the Evac Shelter with an unskilled character, one of the best and easiest weapons to get is a quarter staff. Search the bathrooms for a first aid kit with a pair os scissors, grab a rock outside, smash a young/small tree for a long branch, get fabrication level 1 by doing anything, then craft a quarterstaff with the scissors and long stick. A solid weapon for both offense and defense, good even for a weak and unskilled character. Alternatively pick the street fighting backgroung during character creation to have an easier start and not die to basic zombies.
Youll get food, weapons, and decent clothing/materials for wearing/tailoring. All of which are extremely helpful for the early game
