Sure if that’s because they were zombies (some of which have intentionally very low perception values for lore reasons) or if it was them being confused, I know bigger staircases really mess them up tho so digging into the ground might be pretty lonely but you can actually use timber and stone to build some pretty well made structures and also the agricultural system is pretty in depth and you can become self sufficient and if you really want do the DF thing you can make alcohol but that being said this isn’t dwarf fortress tee hee wing hundred proof every few hours you’ll either develop a metabolic addiction or kill yourself if you drink too much or too strong
You can get some resources from mining, but I don't think you can find random ores by digging in the same way as say Dwarf Fortress. I think, for instance, you can make some types of sand, concrete, etc. from dug Earth.
But my preferred use for Z levels is throwing grenades down stairs
