Pixel Art Academy: Learn Mode

Issues With Saving
So, I have tried this a couple of times, and while it is helping me with pixel art, I am having one issue. It won't let me save.

To clarify, it will say that it has saved my game and when I go back and check, I can re-load where I left off, but if I whenever I re-launch this game after a day or so of not using it, everything is gone, and I have to do a new game all over again.

Is anyone else having this problem? How do I fix it?

Hm, I don't think anyone else reported quite something like it, but it can help me see if something strange is happening if you zip up the game's folder and send it to hi@retronator.com. On Windows that would be C:\Users\Your-name\AppData\Roaming\Pixel Art Academy Learn Mode\

In that folder there is a saves folder and that's where the game looks up the save files (which appear as floppies in the load game menu). Every time you load a game it also creates a copy of the save file and puts it into the save backups folder with a timestamp of when the game was loaded. That's to prevent any significant game loss if some big errors come up during Early Access.

But what you're describing would mean that the whole saves or even the game folder in Roaming would be disappearing. Do you perhaps have some sort of disc cleanup automation that would clean up your AppData\Roaming folder?

I am seeing a very similar thing. Not sure if it matters but I'm running the game on linux using proton. What happens is the save file gets created but doesn't appear to be loadable after closing the game.

How do you close the game? Through the menu or kill it somehow?

Just through the normal main menu quit button. Each time I create a new user I get a new save in the saves folder you mention. As long as I don't quit I can load the save game. However, if I close the game, I don't get a load game menu button after that.

I wonder if this could be worked around via cloud saves. Is that feature far away?

Hm, that is strange indeed you're just losing saves like that. Maybe the Roaming folder gets nuked for some reason? Can you launch the game and have the Roaming folder open, start a new game to see if it appears in the saves folder, and then close the game and see what happens to those folders after?

As for cloud saves, hopefully that would fix it yeah, at least if the Roaming folder doesn;t get deleted immediately after closing the game as it needs time to sync. How far away it is is hard to say as there are many competing features for what to work on next. Color blind support might come first from QOL features.

I figured out the issue! I was running the game from an external hard drive (which for all my other games works - but they have cloud saves). If I move the game to my main hard drive where proton is installed, loading works. It seems like it may be related to https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-runtime/issues/470 and https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-runtime/issues/393. Basically I think proton has a security feature where it doesn't allow folders to be seen on external media (at least by default). Maybe setting "STEAM_COMPAT_MOUNTS=/path/to/external/folder %command%" would work.

Once I get my hands on a SteamDeck I will also re-enable the native Linux version which is now hidden, so hopefully that will fix this issue as well.

After further looking, I'm not sure it is the issues I linked. But having the game on the local hard drive does work. Glad to hear you'll enable a native Linux build in the future too. That and/or cloud saves likely will fix this corner case. Thanks for your help
