Farming...Someone explain how it works?
Hey Guys,

So the farming is troubling me. Firstly - I can't really get farms made because, due to the new totem and 'sprogging' fixes, i can't stop my followers from getting to a plot to make a house before i have got a farmer out of the settlement centre.

When i do make a farm (or a few), then when they finally start to harvest I find there are way too little farmers to cover all the farms, usually resulting in 1 or two of them being totally ignored and them all focussing on just the one field.

Anyone else understand it more than me and willing to explain?

Thanks,

~TEG.

P.S. What's the right-click on settlement symbol /12 or something. Looks like it's farm related!

i dealed with it this way:

first i destroyed ALL houses i had outside of settlements
then i waited untill ALL my blue clothed followers outside were dead (checking this with a totem showing a 4)
you need to terraform inhabitant every space a house can be build or the homeless followers will just build new houses there.

now when all were dead and i had no more people living in houses outside, i could make as much space for farms as i want without problems.

If you're struggling with non-farmer followers stealing up the plots, kill them with finger of god. Just be careful not to do it too close to abodes!

I find farms any smaller than size 3 plots don't seem to be very productive. Try size 3 or 4+ plots & see how that goes instead.

Do we need houses anymore?
I dont want to destroy all my houses inside settlements just for farms,
what if in the Iron age we need soldiers or some type of craftsmen?
what are you guys doing? converting all settlement land to farms?
- how do we get belief then?

Hey, does anyone know if the farms are meant to work while you're away or if they only work when you're actually playing? I just got farming last night, set up a few farms and collected ~50food and when I came back to it today the amount hadn't changed. Is this a bug or is this happening for everyone?

they work the same way as abodes I belive. So you need to have 1000 farmers and it keeps incressing like the population did. Now its just farmers. And the bigger the plots the more farmers you get.

totalabyss i think ur wrong, farmers collect from the fields, and when they get back your food. i havent build farms in like 4 hours and still get a constant flow of food (during the day) ...

yeah totalabyss is wrong. the farms continue to generate food. if you rightclick-and-hold on the settlement in a town it'll tell you how many farmers you have and the max you can have in the settlement (similar to abodes). I have way more food than # of farmers.

Has anyone figured out how to force a town to make more farmers? I only seem to be able to make farmers if a farm plot is withing maybe 1/4 the radius of my town center.

So far I've been working around this by only making farmers at night and making like 50 of them so no one claims the closest feild. This works well to get farms made, but then most seem to die out and my fields are only half worked and I can't make any more farmers.

I'm having problems even getting farms in the first place-- I have land open, healthy settlements, everything (I think) mentioned in the card, but I have yet to see a single farmer produced from one of my settlements. Anyone have any ideas on what might be wrong?

I'm having the same problem too, I have no farmer follower even though I unlocked them ): I should of reseted my land

The game gives very little feedback on exactly what's going on, but I managed to make a settlement of almost purely farmland (with a lot of farms outside the settlement radius as well). First, I made a 1-size plot, dropped the settlement on it, and made sure no one was wandering around, before I leveled out huge tracts of land on one of the lower green-colored layers (layer 12) and beautified it. The settlement had the flag, so I click-spammed to get farmers out of it. They made farms out of the plots, and have been continually respawning automatically each day to farm it and bring in food, but even with that many, it's painfully slow.
Things to note. Farmland seems to work best in 4- or 5-size plots, with 1-size plots saying their harvestable food drops to 0 within the first day, while my largest, 6-size plot has 29,000 food and still rising. Additionally, farmland does produce belief--and insane amounts of it. After 9 hours offline, that settlement gave me 380,000 belief in one click, but in that same time, my food did not go up whatsoever.
I hope the data helps.
