Of course they spread and grow. My backyard is full of walnut trees now but 50 years ago it was all cornfields.

I've never seen this happen, much as I would like it.

Not only are they not growing, but they also have no point what so ever, besides keeping your people from building more houses. Thus it seems to be a good idea to remove all the trees, and let your ppl build moar huts.

The devs plan on having trees, rocks, etc. be useful later. Do NOT clear them all.

Im guessing that each update grants us more land to build on, a new age etc... Until they reach the final release where we should go serverside with the game (all players playing on one planet). Meaning, it doesnt really matter if u remove trees with the current version, or rocks for that matter.

They also mentioned that trees will grow AND spread, but it's something to come later on.
There's LOTS to be expecting in the game, but it all requires time and us to be patient :)

This game is still in beta. Make your world how you want it. When an update comes where you need more trees and rocks, start a new world. I plan on sending meteors and all that jazz on my followers here in the near future. It should be fun.

As to your question, I have not noticed any new trees sprouting. I do tend to leave some of the natural terrain around because I like having some random qualities to the terrain.

To control the size of houses (in MP-Games) i move the land. But i think it could be a nice idea to plant trees or rocks to control the size of houses, because a tree or rock could be cheaper then land moving. In example a tree could cost 10 believe and sell for 5 so it cost in the end 5. So you can control for less the housesizes. Thats important for me in multiplayer games.
