you can easiliy future proof it by making it a one time transaction game like journey, im sure more people will play it then, it will also make this game something that wont be forgotten.
Game has HUGE potential, lovely community and longevity, but I feel like for a product promoting kindness and softness on all levels it takes away players souls at the same time. Yes, the game is free to play, but is it really? You have to log in daily otherwise you will miss out on all the so-called free things you can buy with candles. And candle runs take time. You go buy seasonal passes, but you still require to grind daily otherwise all will be lost. Haven't finished season in time even with premium pass? it's over. Missed on candle runs? can't get the free items cos every cool item from spirits costs 100+ candles.
I miss wild Eden runs, friends hands holding, hugs and Wasteland adventures (my all time fav area) but my dudes and dudettes, all I feel now is just never-ending grind.
(Didn't play Sky for the whole 2024, but I'm sure it's still there after all these years)
if they solved the grind problem (by reducing the grind substantially so people could actually ENJOY the game) then I see a good bit of players either sticking around longer, or returning as a whole
they know the community they have: it's mostly children and other ppl who in general don't play a lot of videogames, MUCH LESS online live service ones
they know they can abuse and abuse the playerbase without any significant backlash, so they will because we all love money
and you bet that ppl will still defend the game with arguments like "oh the cosmetics may have an absurd pricetag and be absurdly time consuming to grind for, but it's only a cosmetic you don't need it to enjoy the game" as if the WHOLE PURPOSE/PROGRESSION of the game isn't collecting items, hanging out is only half (probably even less) of the game
remember that in an industry that accepts mediocrity you will only receive mediocrity
