the think the problem is that these games are first made for consoles in mind where the architectures are modern, so the games ends up depending in these instructions
Uncharted and Cyberpunk eventually got fixes, lets just home that Sky or the tools use to build Sky do not strictly require avx2 to function. so a fix can be made
My computer is anything but modern and it can run the game just fine. I don't know if these people just have parts more ancient than mine or what.
Only thing that's modern that I can think of is my GPU because the last one I had fried and it happens to be AMD which, while not performing the best, seems to be pretty compatible with a lot of things, and I keep my drivers relatively up to date.
Like what others said, some "old" PC we have are already on the 10th Gen (no longer in production) or above CPU... even the 12th Gen is near outdated and doesn't support AVX512... Only the 13th Gen and above have AVX512 nowadays...
So blaming a game that still make use of a 9 year old technology (that is no longer in production) and dropped support for 10 years+ old model, is what these guys are doing right now...
I think the problem comes when mobile game is demanding more than games that are actually made for PC. And how simple game demands higher settings than some bigger more complex game. I think that's a problem. And when people download game from steam, they expect it work like other PC games. Like heck, if my super old mobile phone can run Sky, then should some older pc:s aswell as they have naturally higher specs than my sad little samsung.
PC with AVX2 instruction set supports the process of 256 bit chunks of data, while AVX512 supports up to 512 bit...
ARM CPU on your Phone supports SVE2 that can do 2048 bit chunks of data, far far higher than what the normal x86 CPU on the PC can do.
True. but I usually think 'go juice' not instruction set ;P I can almost always get at least plus (if not premium) from regular with some tweaking, etc. But instruction set is a show stopper. And, TBH, one I didn't even think of from those requirements (or *any* requirements, actually).
Anyhow, too bad. I really enjoyed Journey and wanted to give this one a go because of that. Oh, well. Maybe the devs will give post pandemic/bit coin folks who are kind of stuck on older systems for now a break and clean that crap out of the port :(
Well, can't help you with the hardware part... But I can recommend you to similar game like Sky, one that your PC can run.
If you like Journey, Sky is just the repeat of that game with a different art style... merge with ideas heavily inspired by AER (which your PC should be able to play).
https://store.steampowered.com/app/331870/AER_Memories_of_Old/
Just get AER and changed the Ending to Journey, change Journey's Scarf upgrade system to Capes with similar stamina design, then add a 8 person instance (that often disconnect) with chat and emotes, finally, add in the daily grind and cosmetic, and you get Sky Cotl.
You keep ignoring the fact that no where on the main website and steam page says AVX2 is required. So in all you’re just making things up when you’re not able to find a fix for someone.
This is not wrong but not entirely true either. Their Minimal Specs included the very capable CPUs and why FX 8310 is included because it does have its own increased instruction set computation extension, XOP is the CPU's AVX(2?) that allows it to meet the minimal requirements to run this game but nowadays AMD since the Zen Architecture uses AVX2.
Maybe it's worth mentioning that the 'average joe/jane' wouldn't know any of this but anyone could google it if it was on the main page requirements and avoid an install after a couple minutes research. Whereas even techs aren't thinking, "Ooo, I wonder if my CPU instruction set is good enough to play this sorta low-end looking game.." ;P Heh.
And, @Meowish: Thanks for the game suggest. I'll check it out :)
Well, that's why it's simplified to minimum CPU requirement without needing to say much more, at least putting requirement like 256 bit instruction is only going to adds to the question marks the average Joe/Jane already has, especially when they want to play the game with lower spec or can't even fathom the minimum CPU requirement stated on the store page. That simple 6th Gen minimum requirement on the store page is already being ignored by a lot of users here and they keep posting their 4th or 5th gen CPU having trouble running the game all over this forum if you take a good look at it... But when someone said "Make sure your PC meets the game requirement", they mean to check that part as well, they don't have to worry about AVX2 at all, just whether or not their CPU meets the 6th gen requirement, easy peasy... Only those tech savvy ones who tried to run the game on lower spec would need to worry about things like AVX2 or 256 bit instruction set, note that even AVX with 256 bit instruction support may still be able to run the game, but i am not going to add that part when passing help on this forum here, it just adds to the complication and headache and i may need to copy paste some long replies trying to educate others on something that may or may not work until i take a good look at their spec, especially when i can use that time for other stuffs. And even when they get to run the game with those lower spec, there's no guarantee that the game will run smooth, and they will be back complaining why their game crashes or why their game is lagging or doing weird behaviors... That's why the game requirement is stated as simple as a 6th Gen CPU, if they only put AVX2 as requirement, that includes some 4th and 5th gen CPU that might or might not meet the game's requirement at all, as well as other CPU of that generation that didn't have AVX2 but supports 256 bit computing are going to raise questions like "Why can this CPU run the game when it doesn't have AVX2?"... ignorance and uneducated could cause more problem than the devs can handle, thus they aren't going to make it complicated for everyone, just a simple ix-6xxx (6th gen) CPU MINIMUM requirement is enough to clarify their game's requirement for the majority of the users who actually take time to read the requirement on the store page. The actual recommended spec is the 8th Gen and above, which you may tweak and toy with the 6th or 7th gen to catch up with. The 6th gen is just the starting line to be able to start the game... anything below that is a may or may not work territory that, if those guys can't bother to read the minimum spec requirement on the page, or even understand the spec and serial number listed there, i doubt they will be able to understand anything further than that like 256 bit computing[en.wikipedia.org]
And you're welcome! AER is a hit or miss game for some, just like Sky imo... if you like AER you may be looking forward to play Sky later when you have a better PC, if you don't like AER, it's going to be hard to like Sky...
You’re pretty much saying you don’t even know why and just throwing “ AVX2” word around without real proof that it is needed and the cause of players error. Instead of giving false information why for clout, why not send a message to the developers and ask them if it is the cause instead of making players buy new hardware that they clearly cant do.
Based on the cases I've seen in this forum, I'm pretty sure they're right.
I kept asking people for their processor models here for a fair bit, and so far the pattern is there: people that say that the game doesn't run at all or shows an "illegal instruction" error message (which is indeed the error that shows up when trying to run an instruction that the CPU does not support) are using processors without AVX2. It's not 100% proof, but it's at a point that refuting this would be difficult against the existing pile of relevant crash complaints in here.
To add to that, AVX2 was a requirement for Sky PC Beta back in the summer of 2023[sky-children-of-the-light.fandom.com]; that page quotes a form that has since been deleted, but if you dig even deeper, The Wayback Machine remembers everything[web.archive.org].
There doesn't have to be an official confirmation for this to be the case.
However, lack of the official requirement now might indicate tentative intention to patch it out. They might be looking at the support requests, feedback and community hubs to see if there's enough demand for AVX2 removal to place it higher on their (probably quite big) list of priorities.
So by all means, make yourselves heard. Not to the point of harassing the devs please, a single blip from every affected player in their feedback mechanisms should be enough.
