Should I be trying to 100% the constellations on my first run through?
Im a massive journey fan and only found out today that this game came to pc, i was wondering if i should be scouring the maps on my first run through the game or if i should simply breeze through it and come back later after i have reached the end?

Best to do the entire story first then take it slow.

It doesn't matter too much, though the more winged lights you find, the better, and you'll need either a friend to guide you through, or spirits to find some of them.

It's not easy to 100% the constellation on your 1st run, especially half of the spirit tree are locked behind ascended candles which you need to grind Eden to get (weekly reset) and small amount from the Shard Eruption Event (check the gate at home for daily abnormal)

As fellow Journey fan: Play it for the experience first and then for the completion. But my tip is this: Do not spend candles on cosmetics and emote-upgrades yet. Until you got all constellations complete (in another playthrough), always spend candles in the centre part of the tree, till you see you need pink candles, then level up other spirits. Keep in mind not to confuse them with seasonal spirits.

But for now, just take in the environments, you will feel much happier.

You need to get ALL the cosmetic and emote upgrades from all the regular spirit's friendship tree in each area before the Elder will show up in the constellation... And a final visit to Eden to meet the Elder to unlock the Elder's shop and cosmetic. That's how you 100% the constellation.

Half of those friendship tree is hidden behind a lock with a pair of wings (known as Winged Buff) that you need to unlock using Ascended Candles. You can get ascended candles from the (Strong) Shard Eruptions event, check the Home gate portals to see if any of the area's gate has red shards shown on them, that means this area has the Eruption event going on. But the Ascended candles you can get from these events are very small amount (about 1~2). The only effective way to collect Ascended candles is to goto Eden (The Ending area of the game) and finish the game and reincarnate, you can grind about 15+ ascended candles in Eden, this one reset weekly.

So while it's possible to 100% the constellation without going to Eden (End of the game), it will take a player ages to do so and have to stick to the time table of the Shard Eruption daily hoping for a Strong eruption. Even with Eden, it will still mean months of grinding to get the constellations to 100%.

Not to mention the candles and hearts needed to unlock the cosmetics and emote upgrades, which means you will need to do quite the full run (speed run) of the game daily to get the 20 candles (reset daily) and make tons of friends to exchange hearts. So it will be months of commitment and grind fest for you if you aimed to get 100% for all constellations.

P/S: You can finish the game up to Eden's Ending in about 2~3 hours play time. The rest of the game is the repeat of the full game run like Journey.

If you wonder whether or not it's worth the time to finish a constellation to 100%, the answer is it depends... The ultimate (best?) reward you get from it is the face accessories that gives you ONE chance of invulnerability (Ultimate Shield), means you get to survive more easily with it. the shield will shattered and the accessory no longer glows when you get hit by something that may caused you to lose winged lights. You will need to recharge it by visiting the Temple of said Elder or Eden after that.
