how do you link up with friends in game?

i was able to add my gf using the friend code thing but how do i link up with her? i wanna explore alongside her

You need to goto the friendship totem at the start of the aviary village or the Constellation Stone near the gate areas at Home/Aviary to access your friendlist. From there click on the friend you wish to interact with, then click the teleport icon to teleport to their instance.

I should also clarify that if you don't know already, you can teleport back Home to the Aviary Village by pressing escape and using the Home feature.

It took me and my friends a few hours before we found that out.

Helpful notes about joining your friends:
1. You can't teleport to them when they're in an area you haven't been in before.
2. You can't teleport to them if they're in a cutscene.
3. It seems to take a minute or so to actually enter the servers proper once you load into the game, so you might not be able to join them the instant they log in.
