in the trailer for the game, the name they give the player character is "barry", should we consider that their name¿¿¿???

In the code they're referred to as "Barry" (791 times) or "NamelessMC" (11 times) or "PLAYER_NAME" (126 times)

So Barry is the closest we got to canon.

That's what is generally accepted as the canon name, yeah.
Same for the OC of forces being considered "Buddy" since that's the word used to refer to him often.

I looked it up, and apparently according to the devs, he's a "quokka", a species of housecat-sized marsupials native to western Australia.

I've never heard of that before today.

I would argue that the main character's name is like the epilogue options at the end, every option is just as canon. Barry is the closest we have to an "official" name, but it isn't really enough to call it official. In the trailer the character needed to be named something after all, their name shows up in the text box, and file names that nobody playing the game normally will see can't tell us anything about the canon or what's "official," only what's actually visible in the game can do that (at least, in this case we have no reason to believe we can find anything with canon implications in the file names). Even if you want to take file names as some kind of communication from the devs and thus in a way "word of god," the fact that they were also called "PLAYER_NAME" communicates the opposite message, and that they were called "NamelessMC" at all is a stronger implication that the name barry is just what they internally referred to the character as at some point before the game was released.
