Mac version won't start
I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro running OSX 10.8.4.

Since I bought the HumbleBundle game, I first installed the Steam version. The game opened, I was able to select new game, and then the game froze on the loading screen. After quitting, every time I tried to reopen I'd first get a dialog saying "The last time you opened Gone Home, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?" This dialog disappears immediately (usually before I can click anything, but even if I can, nothing happens), to be replaced by a system dialog saying "Gone Home quit unexpectedly."

This continues to happen every time I try to open the game. I've uninstalled and reinstalled from Steam several times, and then installed the DRM-free version from the Humble page, but this gives me the exact same two dialog windows when I try to open it. I can't find the game's cache where the Fullbright website says it should be.

I've tried combing through the forums but don't see any workarounds that work for me (don't use Avast antivirus, changing my screen resolution does nothing). Any other Mac users experiencing the same thing? Has anything worked for you?

I, too am having the issue of a blank screen during initial load. I'm not getting a cassette or anything, just a black full-screen window and music.

I don't have anything in my ~/Library/Saved App State folder as the game hasn't ♥♥♥♥♥♥ to the point where it writes anything there. I do have the folder mentioned in the Caches folder, but deleting that doesn't resolve the issue.

I got this game because almost every good game reviewer has this in their top 10 games of 2013 list, but it's frustrating when I can't play it! Grr!
LOL! And just like that, I fixed the issue.

Here's what I did:

Noticed there wasn't a ~/Library/Saved Application State/unity.The Fullbright Company.Gone Home.savedState folder, so I just created a blank one with the "unity.The Fullbright Company.Gone Home.savedState" name in it.

Launched the game and it works! Maybe it's a permissions issue when the game attempts to build that folder?
My problem is persisting. I click on the application, it pops up on my hotbar for a second and the dissapears leaving this message:

Not to sound obtuse, but are you opening the right app? Says in your crash log that Starbound is launching, not Gone Home.

I was having the same problem and while I don't appreciate why it works for me, (MAC tyro) this method does suceed in my case.

Go to steam library
-control strike Gone Home and select properties
-select browse local files from opitions
-and in the window that opens, select the Gone Home icon.

Works for me. Is steam generating a pseduo/false icon? Or is this likewise working around the issue a la the above mention "delete save files" fix?

Hope it helpful to some one.

This helped me solve my problem, thank you very much!
Hello, I've tried everything in this thread, and nothing seems to work. I am using the steam application.
I launch the program, and the Gone Home Icon appears in the dock, and the menubar says "Gone Home", but nothing else happens.

1) Specifications: 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB Ram, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB, OSX 10.9.5
2) As far as I can tell, there are no unity files in ~/Library.
3) I cannot find a player.log file. What path is it?

$ find ~/Library/ -name player.log -print
returns nothing

Well, another OSX user here who just spent money on a game that won't run. El Capitan. Plenty of RAM. GTX970 (Asus) with 4GB. Symptom: get music and the splash screen (spooky house) and a live mouse, but the buttons at bottom do not respond. Also the game for some reason keeps trying to create a new desktop.

After having to Force Quit a couple of times I found a stray error message in a popup on my 2nd display (!) saying that Gone Home.app cannot open file "Gone Home.app" because it does not know how. Looks like some weird install problem. I'll try the browse files magic...

... that got me only a little further. Got past the splash screen (had to right-click on the start button). Long loading with the chalk-line cassette screen, then I'm standing on the front porch with suitcase in hand and no response to keyboard or mouse. WASD keys do nothing, mouse clicks do nothing. ESC is seen and gets me to the main menu; within the main menu, no mouse interaction, up/dn arrow keys allow me to select menu items (buttons) but I can't activate them.

This game has such a great reputation -- how can it be so unplayable?
