Audience :
Movie based (action, horror, sad, etc) 50-200k
Romance (simple, relax and enjoyment) 100k-1+mil
I'm sorry if it seems that this sounded negative. I just saw if there was a potential niche that was open
Love is All Around (LiAA) is so successful and has reached over 1 million copies sold because most players (the audience) like romance with pretty girls in games. Compared to other games like Vanity Fair: The Pursuit, which has a very rich story but only sold around 100,000 to 150,000 copies, many similar games have not reached high sales because they are movie-based (action, horror, sad, etc.). While Vanity Fair: The Pursuit does add romance into the game, most players prefer games that focus solely on romance, so comedy romance FMV games can reach over a million copies sold.
If the game’s target audience is not very high, it can be movie-based but must include romance and pretty girls for the player character; this is the key to success. If it aims to reach a million copies sold, it needs to be a comedy with romance, like LiAA. One important point is not to follow LiAA's favorability requirement meter to go to the next chapter; this is a big mistake.
List of good games :
Love is All Around - the best comedy romance, rich love story
Vanity Fair: The Pursuit - very rich story
Director Simulator - very rich love story, the best game plot design, so many features in 1 game, very good love lesson
I understand what you mean. Western tends to go the route of trying to please everyone and makes most things very "neutral." I'm not looking to copy, but I really like how this game isn't overly s-xual in nature. There's romance, but not xxx stuff. That's my goal. Of course easier said then done, but I think it can be done.
Back to the country of origin, I suspect this might do well with indie developers in like Poland or something. I doubt the West would take it seriously, as even dating sim games like "super seducer" series came under a lot of fire by feminists (my opinion - nothing against feminists). Politics aside, this would be a great concept though. Especially if it was a lesbian romance dating sim - which Korea or China most likely won't touch for a while.
Feel would be impossible to get instragram models, due to how many of these fmv have the characters interacting with one another and no way have the budget to fly them all to a single location
When there is no sexual content, the things that attract players are the pretty actresses and the touching love stories.
It’s good not to copy, like how Korean FMVs copy Chinese FMVs exactly. For me, it doesn’t make any sense to play the same design FMV over and over again. But you need to try those games to understand why they have become popular.
The game may not be realistic for the player character to have so many romances; however, this depends on how the story is written.
Another consideration you can think for is that your hypothetical game could explore romantic relationships beyond the "dating/will-we-won't-we" phase such as navigating life as official boyfriend/girlfriend or a married couple. As that's an area of romantic relationships that tend to get less attention in Chinese romance FMV games.
Although "Five Dates" and "Ten Dates" are British-made romance FMV games, I think their positive reception indicates that there is interest in English language romance FMV games that explore romantic relationships from the sweet to complex ones without veering into overly sexual territory (like "Super Seducer", which of course is hilarious).
Regardless, I would personally be interested in your project if it does go ahead and love to be kept updated on it! I wish you the best of luck!
Here's the biggest issue I'm having to deal with in terms of the fmv, which is race. I one hand I don't want the player to pursue one of the character due to their race and ignore the personalities, BUT if I make the fmv all one race it will have issues as well when it comes to the US. That's honestly my biggest hurdle, but it's one I need to have set before other things can get started.
I do luckily have somewhat of a solid base (though I can't say I've played a ton of these to compare story lines)
