Potential interest in an american based fmv?
Really well shot game. but going down the rabbit whole that most are coming from China or Korea. I feel that there's potential market for one. Just looking for opinions since I can potentially get a crew with a budget to start it in the near future

the secret of China and Korea FMV succeed is they add romance and all pretty girls... there are more audience on simple, relax and enjoyment with all romance narrative than movie based FMV.
Audience :
Movie based (action, horror, sad, etc) 50-200k
Romance (simple, relax and enjoyment) 100k-1+mil

I'm sorry if it seems that this sounded negative. I just saw if there was a potential niche that was open

I mean, for Western FMV games, they are good, but they are not interesting because the games have less romance and pretty girls. It’s something like having a hero in a movie but no romance for him (the main character - player character).

Love is All Around (LiAA) is so successful and has reached over 1 million copies sold because most players (the audience) like romance with pretty girls in games. Compared to other games like Vanity Fair: The Pursuit, which has a very rich story but only sold around 100,000 to 150,000 copies, many similar games have not reached high sales because they are movie-based (action, horror, sad, etc.). While Vanity Fair: The Pursuit does add romance into the game, most players prefer games that focus solely on romance, so comedy romance FMV games can reach over a million copies sold.

If the game’s target audience is not very high, it can be movie-based but must include romance and pretty girls for the player character; this is the key to success. If it aims to reach a million copies sold, it needs to be a comedy with romance, like LiAA. One important point is not to follow LiAA's favorability requirement meter to go to the next chapter; this is a big mistake.

The best is to try to play the games for 100% achievement completion. Referring to a guide for how to reach 100% achievement is fine; you need to know why the players feel so satisfied with the narrative in the game.

List of good games :
Love is All Around - the best comedy romance, rich love story
Vanity Fair: The Pursuit - very rich story
Director Simulator - very rich love story, the best game plot design, so many features in 1 game, very good love lesson

I understand what you mean. Western tends to go the route of trying to please everyone and makes most things very "neutral." I'm not looking to copy, but I really like how this game isn't overly s-xual in nature. There's romance, but not xxx stuff. That's my goal. Of course easier said then done, but I think it can be done.

i don't know about "american" but there are definitely enough instagram and tiktok models in the West to rival "love is all around" and similar games. There are some Chinese fmv games that have non-chinese actresses which is cool IMO.

Back to the country of origin, I suspect this might do well with indie developers in like Poland or something. I doubt the West would take it seriously, as even dating sim games like "super seducer" series came under a lot of fire by feminists (my opinion - nothing against feminists). Politics aside, this would be a great concept though. Especially if it was a lesbian romance dating sim - which Korea or China most likely won't touch for a while.

Politics would cause issues potentially. I don't want to turn it into a political situation, since the US has been very political with races, genders, sexuality. I don't want it to turn into something where there are huge problems. It was actually meant for the asian market potentially as something not seen before. I don't think the US would care as much for this.

Feel would be impossible to get instragram models, due to how many of these fmv have the characters interacting with one another and no way have the budget to fly them all to a single location

Most of China's FMV is just romance with no s-xual content. There are some with s-xual FMV, and most of this FMV is not allowed on Steam and has moved to Epic Games. The important parts are the pretty actresses and romance, and there are many players who like to have choices to choose the girls they like with different personalities. Most of the FMVs usually have six main female actors or more for players to have romance with.
When there is no sexual content, the things that attract players are the pretty actresses and the touching love stories.
It’s good not to copy, like how Korean FMVs copy Chinese FMVs exactly. For me, it doesn’t make any sense to play the same design FMV over and over again. But you need to try those games to understand why they have become popular.
The game may not be realistic for the player character to have so many romances; however, this depends on how the story is written.

I personally would be interested in one! I think if your potential cast list included female love interests of different races or nationalities, that would be something that could make your hypothetical game stand out from the romance FMV crowd. As someone else pointed out for Chinese romance FMV games, non-Chinese love interests are quite uncommon (like Nico from "Knowledge or Know Lady") and I think that would help not only for a marketing perspective, but also allows your story to explore romantic relationships with different cultural considerations or factors (like how does a couple of different races/nationalities navigate each other's cultures or quirks?).

Another consideration you can think for is that your hypothetical game could explore romantic relationships beyond the "dating/will-we-won't-we" phase such as navigating life as official boyfriend/girlfriend or a married couple. As that's an area of romantic relationships that tend to get less attention in Chinese romance FMV games.

Although "Five Dates" and "Ten Dates" are British-made romance FMV games, I think their positive reception indicates that there is interest in English language romance FMV games that explore romantic relationships from the sweet to complex ones without veering into overly sexual territory (like "Super Seducer", which of course is hilarious).

Regardless, I would personally be interested in your project if it does go ahead and love to be kept updated on it! I wish you the best of luck!

Here's the biggest issue I'm having to deal with in terms of the fmv, which is race. I one hand I don't want the player to pursue one of the character due to their race and ignore the personalities, BUT if I make the fmv all one race it will have issues as well when it comes to the US. That's honestly my biggest hurdle, but it's one I need to have set before other things can get started.
I do luckily have somewhat of a solid base (though I can't say I've played a ton of these to compare story lines)

If a girl is of the same race as the player but has a personality that the player dislikes, and another girl is of a different race but has a personality that the player likes, which one would the player choose? Choosing the girl of a different race would indicate that love can overcome racial differences.... However, the game needs to feature multiple races of girls to attract players into the game.
The race on the main player isn't shown (pov), so that wouldn't be an issue to try and create different races of the main character
