So it doesn't matter as much which stats you pump; only that they go up so that your level matches theirs closely.
So if you have an armor set that you like, upgrade it as much as you can; You should get plenty of resources as you play anyway. If they all suck to you and don't make a difference, pick the one that boosts your stats the most.
tldr; Yes, your overall level is the key to making combat not be a slog.
Well now I know. I actually did beat the game way back when on Normal. I wanted to replay on the hardest difficulty. If it's meant for a NG+ and not NG that makes more sense.
Next game they release I'll do Give me a Challenge first then, and then GMGOW on NG+ since I'm sure it will follow a similar pattern.
