I hate Atreus
I swear, Kratos and his stoicism was only seriously challenged when he started to have to deal with Atreus. I never seen more annoying character for my whole life, maybe except Skylar in Breaking Bad. All Kratos wants to do is keep his son safe, ready and capable of surviving when he himself is gone but Atreus seems not to see that, no, he is "abused by his fathers vision of him". The very same father who spend whole previous game developing his sons story and now in Ragnarok we see this all over again. In one moment Atreus is joyfull and excited, then he starts being arrogant for no reason and at the end he is sad and rebels about anything that is near. And because what is near most of the times is his father he rebels agaist him. After seeing all this there is question in my mind: who Faye cheater with that resulted in Atreus? Because it just can't be he is son of Kratos. Never ever. (if that comes out later in story, please no spoilers).

When I came to this part where Atreus was replaced by Freya it was best time of the game, I enjoyed it greatly. Both talks between Freya, Kratos and Mimir and knowing Atreus is gone and noone will annoy me now with his stupid attitude. I liked Freya style of fighting somehow more usefull to me as well, even though I think she is pathetically weak. She is incarnation of this meme:
1st panel - boss when he is your enemy - strong af.
2nd panel - boss when he becomes your ally - toothless puppy.

Sadly, now I progressed in story a bit and Atreus is back at my side.:(

I honestly can't really stand Atreus or his sections either. I find him just as annoying as you but, and this is a big but, all that you just describe here...

...is a pretty good summary of "being a teenager". Atreus is pretty well written - even if he is incredibly annoying - because he's a teenager who also happens to be a god who has been told he's got a super special uber destiny.

I just hope his arc is finished and he is nowhere near the next game.

^This, plus Atreus at a very young age had to deal with losing his mother, and I know from experience how crappy that can be, I lost my mom and only sister at about the same age. You can see though when Atreus is not being given strict rules or restrictions from his dad, he is quiet friendly when he's with those his own age, or those helping him or telling him stories. And even his dad sometimes commends him on his skill and intelligence.

He's portrayed pretty realistically, especially given the fact he's not just a child becoming an adult, but also dealing with things FAR beyond what most children or adults have to.
