How can I get the compass showing?

Steam PC mouse and keybourd (no touchpad)

Settings are on..
Wide hud: 16:9
Hud Customisation: default
Compass on

But it does not show.

You dont have a compass at the start of the game. Its given to you after you play the story for a bit.
