True there is no guarantee ,buts it's far too early to say that PC users got shafted.
Weeks and Weeks later, and by then people will have beaten it. ALL this should have been fixed before release.
Returnal was the game that made me jump ship and get a PS5 instead of keep buying and playing these games on PC. I couldn't play it more than 30 minutes without experiencing framerate drops that would only fix after restarting the game. Also you forgot to mention the Spider-Man Remastered and Miles Morales ports that keep crashing constantly on PC and Nixxes never fixed that. I was planning on getting these games on PC last year until i started reading threads about this issue here on Steam. Another game that was horrible in terms of performance was FF7 Remake. I had to download a mod to reduce stuttering and even then the game would stutter (although a bit less)
I still visit these forums to see how bad or good these new ports are to decide what I'll do in the future, when the PS6 is out
I would say overall they are good on most modern configurations. I think the PC high end experience on both Spiderman available is far superior on the PC. The ray traced reflections aren't even close along with the genuine ability to play at 4K with DLAA at 120fps with frame gen (no dlss). Granted that's max gaming money but it's still a really awesome experience I wouldn't discount. I think generally though unless someone has a 2080Ti or above equivalent then there's not much real advantage on PC except for customization that can still typically make a better experience through using optimization configurations based on user preferences which matter to some enthusiasts.
As for returnal, I have it and did read about some issues but it's been fine for me. I hope to get into the game as it hasn't kept my attention yet but I hear it's amazing.
When i stopped playing AAA games on PC and got a PS5 instead of a notebook with a RTX 3070ti i chose stability (less crashes or stutters) over higher resolution and framerate just because i dread troubleshooting stuff when things go wrong on PC. I remember when Capcom released an update that broke Resident Evil Village for me (this was after they removed their own horrible DRM), to the point where i had to use safe mode and test every .exe that was running on my PC until i found out which one was causing the crash. This crash would only trigger after playing the game for more than 10 minutes so i couldn't test things quickly, i had to play the game a little bit and only then exit it to see if the crash was gone. It took me more than 2h to do that because the task that caused this crash was one of the last programs on the list, and i had +40 listed there.
I think i just don't have the patience to sit down and fix these things anymore or to do some research to figure out a fix for my problem (or to read the driver update notes to find out if any of my old games are broken on the current version of said driver). Maybe in the future I'll come back to PC, like i did many many times in the past, I'm just taking a break now and focusing on console
It would be nice to have both a decent PC/Notebook and a PS5 but in Brazil a PS5 is already expensive and a PC is even more expensive, so you gotta make a choice. I was lucky this time around to have both PC and PS5 because i got my notebook as a gift, 4 years ago. Having said all that, i still have a blast playing co-op games with my friend here on Steam but i love playing on console too.
The issue with Returnal isn't widespread. Some people speculate that it's a memory leak, but i don't know. Unfortunately, the studio behind the port (Climax Studios) already moved on from this game.
Anyway, i know that both PC and console have their own pros and cons, at the end of the day it all comes down to user experience and expectations. I'm happy where i am now and i know most PC players are happy on their PCs as well. Like i said, it's all about choice. In the end we all want to play games and enjoy our time doing so
Edit: i just realized how gigantic this post is, i just like to write, i guess lol
haha no I get it and I wasn't even questioning your rationale or anything as you seem pretty educated on the topic and well positioned in your rationale. I lean on being impatient with certain things and PC troubleshooting can get quickly frustrating for me. I may be lucky but I have noticed way less problems overall from present day compared to the 00's and 2010's. Once I got into PC building as a hobby, I definitely went to the high end of the spectrum but am an old dude anyway. I actually find items like the steam deck to be way more difficult to navigate and tinker with compared to windows but most steam deck users say the opposite (though I have my doubts about the authenticity of a lot of the overly positive cult like positive only vibes).
What's gonna be interesting for you in the coming years assuming you continue to enjoy the console experience will be if it continues to be a viable platform. All through the 2000s and 2010s the stories every console generation and on forums were "PC gaming is dying." Recently I am having the opposite thoughts in wondering how viable consoles like Xbox and PS continue to be with how badly the xbox has done. I feel like manufacturers are so profit hungry that they don't view selling consoles as 'worth it' maybe outside of Nintendo and still Playstation. However it does beg a lurking reality of how Sony, Microsoft and other big platforms would LOVE to sell us ALL subscription services like EA, Microsoft and Epic are doing. It really makes the long term "ownership of our game libraries" even more dubious than it is already. But I know I just took these late night ramblings way outside of the post topic haha. Having a PS5 is really a choice that no one can go wrong with as it's essentially an optimized 10 teraflop common denominator system with super fast SSD that provides a great gaming experience that is less obsessive as the frame counting and other neuroses inducing PC gaming sector. So enjoy the break!
