Disappointing DF review of PC vs PS5 fidelity mode
https://youtu.be/cITEbCFGutc?si=dBT7u4cKxVEgloXH

Basic summary: The review starts off really good but quickly turns to the PC version being somewhat of a lesser port in terms of quality settings compared to the PS5 unfortunately. The overall port is well executed and has a lot of features that are desired like on the spot quality changes and wide-screen support. It seems like for whatever reasons, the console just has some nicer features at best and at worst looks about identical.

Just posting this for information sake as I didn't see it posted.

Based on this video, PC version has stuttering on transitions, texture streaming issues when going through portals, missing/inferior graphical effects compared to PS5 version, muffled audio, and inconsistent performance leading to fps drops. PS5 version still the superior version

Hahaha PC users get shafted again. Good thing I still have my PS5 copy.

The port has a few issues but they all look fixable. The stutter on transitions is very minor It's not like the game has bad traversal or shader compilation stutter. The muffled audio may already be fixed in the latest patch. The rest of the stuff will very likely be fixed in patches. Its got a good technical foundation from which to build on.
I hope they fix all the issues. I prefer to play on PC for the higher framerate, but not with all these issues. It's just surprising to see a PC port this compromised graphically from Playstation.

I don't consider it that compromised, as Alex stressed in his video the port has a good technical foundation with some minor issues. I'd be quite confident the majority of these issues will be fixed in patches.

Maybe, maybe not. Returnal still has stuttering issues that were never fixed. Ratchet and Clank has issues with texture streaming, directstorage, and ray tracing mode that were never fixed. Sackboy has bad performance that was never fixed. The point is, its not always a guarantee that the issues will all be fixed.

The missing effects such as the fog appear to be an issue with DLSS.

True there is no guarantee ,buts it's far too early to say that PC users got shafted.

I have been mostly ensconced in the PC ecosystem for the past couple years that I didn't play GoW Ragnarok on my PS5. I thought about getting into it after Shadow of the Erdtree but figured I would wait for the PC version. I'm not in a rush to play it so I do hope better things come of the PC version. I think overall a lot of quality PC ports have come from Playstation but I would be lying if I didn't wish for a bigger budget to port the game over with technologiest like Ray Tracing and higher fidelity textures and assets. GoW 2018 really was ahead of it's time given it was essentially a PS4 game that just had such beautiful big set piece design and budget. It looked amazing and I think Ragnarok basically just continued to run with that design and work that was done in 2018 without expanding too much. I think it's overall splitting hairs and as much as I am a fan of technology in general and digital foundry like passion for graphics, it will be hard to tell the PC and PS5 version apart. Which is both the good and bad of the situation.

wish they would take the RT cubemap and gone a step further to add RT reflection with the PC version rather than removing it entirely.

So many disparity in visual , I hope next patch fixes these issue and improve zen 2 and zen 3 cpu performance

This stuff will get patched. The game still looks and runs better than the console version.

Weeks and Weeks later, and by then people will have beaten it. ALL this should have been fixed before release.

If you bothered to watch the video, DF says the Quality mode on PS5 looks the same as all Ultra settings on PC (even better in some cases). That's actually nuts.

Returnal was the game that made me jump ship and get a PS5 instead of keep buying and playing these games on PC. I couldn't play it more than 30 minutes without experiencing framerate drops that would only fix after restarting the game. Also you forgot to mention the Spider-Man Remastered and Miles Morales ports that keep crashing constantly on PC and Nixxes never fixed that. I was planning on getting these games on PC last year until i started reading threads about this issue here on Steam. Another game that was horrible in terms of performance was FF7 Remake. I had to download a mod to reduce stuttering and even then the game would stutter (although a bit less)

I still visit these forums to see how bad or good these new ports are to decide what I'll do in the future, when the PS6 is out

I would say overall they are good on most modern configurations. I think the PC high end experience on both Spiderman available is far superior on the PC. The ray traced reflections aren't even close along with the genuine ability to play at 4K with DLAA at 120fps with frame gen (no dlss). Granted that's max gaming money but it's still a really awesome experience I wouldn't discount. I think generally though unless someone has a 2080Ti or above equivalent then there's not much real advantage on PC except for customization that can still typically make a better experience through using optimization configurations based on user preferences which matter to some enthusiasts.

As for returnal, I have it and did read about some issues but it's been fine for me. I hope to get into the game as it hasn't kept my attention yet but I hear it's amazing.

When i stopped playing AAA games on PC and got a PS5 instead of a notebook with a RTX 3070ti i chose stability (less crashes or stutters) over higher resolution and framerate just because i dread troubleshooting stuff when things go wrong on PC. I remember when Capcom released an update that broke Resident Evil Village for me (this was after they removed their own horrible DRM), to the point where i had to use safe mode and test every .exe that was running on my PC until i found out which one was causing the crash. This crash would only trigger after playing the game for more than 10 minutes so i couldn't test things quickly, i had to play the game a little bit and only then exit it to see if the crash was gone. It took me more than 2h to do that because the task that caused this crash was one of the last programs on the list, and i had +40 listed there.

I think i just don't have the patience to sit down and fix these things anymore or to do some research to figure out a fix for my problem (or to read the driver update notes to find out if any of my old games are broken on the current version of said driver). Maybe in the future I'll come back to PC, like i did many many times in the past, I'm just taking a break now and focusing on console

It would be nice to have both a decent PC/Notebook and a PS5 but in Brazil a PS5 is already expensive and a PC is even more expensive, so you gotta make a choice. I was lucky this time around to have both PC and PS5 because i got my notebook as a gift, 4 years ago. Having said all that, i still have a blast playing co-op games with my friend here on Steam but i love playing on console too.

The issue with Returnal isn't widespread. Some people speculate that it's a memory leak, but i don't know. Unfortunately, the studio behind the port (Climax Studios) already moved on from this game.

Anyway, i know that both PC and console have their own pros and cons, at the end of the day it all comes down to user experience and expectations. I'm happy where i am now and i know most PC players are happy on their PCs as well. Like i said, it's all about choice. In the end we all want to play games and enjoy our time doing so

Edit: i just realized how gigantic this post is, i just like to write, i guess lol

haha no I get it and I wasn't even questioning your rationale or anything as you seem pretty educated on the topic and well positioned in your rationale. I lean on being impatient with certain things and PC troubleshooting can get quickly frustrating for me. I may be lucky but I have noticed way less problems overall from present day compared to the 00's and 2010's. Once I got into PC building as a hobby, I definitely went to the high end of the spectrum but am an old dude anyway. I actually find items like the steam deck to be way more difficult to navigate and tinker with compared to windows but most steam deck users say the opposite (though I have my doubts about the authenticity of a lot of the overly positive cult like positive only vibes).

What's gonna be interesting for you in the coming years assuming you continue to enjoy the console experience will be if it continues to be a viable platform. All through the 2000s and 2010s the stories every console generation and on forums were "PC gaming is dying." Recently I am having the opposite thoughts in wondering how viable consoles like Xbox and PS continue to be with how badly the xbox has done. I feel like manufacturers are so profit hungry that they don't view selling consoles as 'worth it' maybe outside of Nintendo and still Playstation. However it does beg a lurking reality of how Sony, Microsoft and other big platforms would LOVE to sell us ALL subscription services like EA, Microsoft and Epic are doing. It really makes the long term "ownership of our game libraries" even more dubious than it is already. But I know I just took these late night ramblings way outside of the post topic haha. Having a PS5 is really a choice that no one can go wrong with as it's essentially an optimized 10 teraflop common denominator system with super fast SSD that provides a great gaming experience that is less obsessive as the frame counting and other neuroses inducing PC gaming sector. So enjoy the break!

"Ultra" settings should definitely make all PS5 fidelity mode gfx effects available on PC and then some. I mean, PC is all about options and customization so there's no harm for those who are running low spec hardware, they can stick to low, medium, high or a mix of different settings. I hope it's just an oversight, I mean there's no reason for Santa Monica to remove random effects from the PC build of the game.
